The Department of Forest Engineering, Resources, and Management in the College of Forestry invites applications for a full-time 1.00 FTE, 12-month, fixed-term, Instructor of Forestry Technology position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

This position consists of instruction/teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses in the area of Geographic Information System (GIS) and Forest Technology. The primary purpose of this position is to foster critical thinking and advance students' knowledge and skills by providing excellence in teaching and instruction in areas such as forest surveying, GIS, Forest Engineering applications, computing applications in forestry, and remote sensing. This position will also support the integration and application of emerging technologies and industry advancements to ensure curriculum relevance and prepare students for evolving workforce and research demands. In addition to instruction, this position will contribute to the design and ongoing refinement of curricula for a micro-credential program within the department.

The incumbent will deliver lectures, lead labs or seminars, lead discussions and other class activities, administer and grade course assignments and exams, advise teaching assistants, incorporate high impact teaching practices, develop new courses, and develop and revise course materials. They will also participate in curriculum decisions and revisions. The individual will teach a variety of courses-both in-person and online (Ecampus).

The incumbent will participate in departmental, college, and university level affairs and governance at a level appropriate to the PD. Service is also expected in support of government, industry, academic organizations, and other professional groups and associations.

Key Responsibilities

90% - Teaching and Mentoring:

• Teach approximately 9 to 12 credits per quarter, including in-person and online (Ecampus) instruction at either the undergraduate or graduate-level. This may include some combination of Forest Engineering Problem Solving and Technology (FE 102), Computing Applications in Forestry (FOR 112), Forest Surveying (FE 208), GIS and Forest Engineering Applications (FE 257), Forest Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry (FE 444), or similar course offerings. Some courses may be offered multiple times per year (in-person and online).
• Develop or redevelop courses as needed; work with ECampus to prepare, update, and present teaching materials; create and grade assignments, quizzes, and exams; assess grades; and hold office hours, as necessary.
• The incumbent will also contribute to the design and ongoing refinement of micro-credential curricula, including developing course content, aligning learning outcomes to credential standards, and advising students pursuing micro-credential pathways.
• Supervise and mentor graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) to support course delivery through leading a discussion, delivering lectures, grading, or supervision of labs.
• Teaching assignments may be adjusted to reflect the needs of the FERM Department.

10% - Service:

• Participate in departmental, college, and university level affairs and governance, including leadership in curriculum and program development, with particular attention to college's micro-credential program. The incumbent may balance service to the institution with service to other professional groups and associations.
• Participate in at least one workshop/activity/training annually (as approved by the supervisor) that enhances the commitment to pedagogy or justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion; provide the supervisor with a short report on how new knowledge will be applied to day-to-day work.

What You Will Need

• A Master's degree focused on Forest Management, Forest Engineering, Forest Technology, or a closely related discipline appropriate to the field of teaching/instructional responsibilities.
• Demonstrated passion for teaching and forestry field activities.
• Experience teaching at the college level or comparable professional environment.
• Experience teaching (as lead instructor or assistant) topics listed as potential duties of the position.
• Demonstrable commitment to student success and/or evidence of exceptional pedagogical performance and continued education.
• Life experiences, training, and/or education that demonstrates a commitment to promoting the values and mission articulated in the College of Forestry's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity Strategic Plan.
• Evidence of effective interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) enabling collaboration with a broad spectrum of students, teachers, researchers, and other professionals.
• Demonstrated skills in a majority of the listed relevant subjects and computer programs, including GIS, spatial analysis techniques, land surveying, programming (e.g. visual basic, python, C), MS Office suite, and higher education Learning Management System (e.g. Canvas).

What We Would Like You to Have

• A PhD degree focused on Forest Management, Forest Engineering, Forest Technology or related disciplines appropriate to the field of teaching/instructional responsibilities.
• Demonstrated ability to teach and support students with diverse quantitative skill levels in large enrollment courses, ensuring student success, engagement, and achievement of course expectations within a positive and inclusive classroom environment.
• Experience with LIDAR, Multispectral imagery, and high density point clouds (e.g. drone based or near ground).
• Experience using Forest Surveying software (e.g. TRAVERSE PC, ROADENG).
• Formal training in course development, pedagogy, and high-impact practices.
• Experience with innovative pedagogies such as flipped, engaged, field-based, online, or hybrid learning.
• Experience working with students with diverse life experiences, including those who are working full time while in school.
• Evidence of effective teaching in both in-person and online learning environments.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

• Teaching Ecampus courses often involves working outside a traditional M-F workweek, sometimes with expectations of responding to students and grading materials on weekends and/or evenings.
• Position will require the ability to work in an outdoor setting for some field instruction and activities in rugged outdoor and forested environments under a variety of weather and field conditions.
