Position Information

Job Title Instructor of the Correctional/Prison Program within Career and College Readiness Job Description

The Instructor (Correctional/Prison Program) within the Career and College Readiness (CCR) Division is responsible for providing high-quality instruction to adult learners in a correctional facility setting. The instructor works collaboratively with correctional staff, CCR administrators, and community partners to support student success. The instructor delivers academic, workforce readiness, and life skills instruction designed to support student success, transition, and reentry into the workforce or postsecondary education. The instructor fosters a safe, respectful, and engaging learning environment while maintaining compliance with the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS), the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (NCDAC), institutional policies, and grant requirements.

This is a full-time, 12-month position reporting to the Director of College & Career Readiness.This position is supported by North Carolina College and Career Readiness (CCR) State funding. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of these funds.

Full Time or Part Time Full Time Essential Duties Summary

Duties and Responsibilities will include the following:

  • Deliver effective instruction in assigned CCR content areas (e.g., Adult Basic Education, High School Equivalency, employability skills).
  • Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with state and college CCR standards and curriculum guidelines.
  • Assess student learning using approved diagnostic and formative assessment tools.
  • Maintain accurate and timely student records, including attendance, progress, and outcomes.
  • Provide individualized instruction and support to meet diverse learner needs, including varying educational levels.
  • Integrate workforce readiness, digital literacy, and life skills into classroom instruction.
  • Maintain compliance with all correctional facility policies, procedures, and security requirements.
  • Foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment within a structured correctional setting.
  • Collaborate with CCR/WDCE leadership, staff, and correctional facility personnel to support program goals.
  • Participate in required professional development and training activities.
  • Support student transition planning, including reentry pathways to employment or further education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Strong oral, written, interpersonal, and organizational communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer applications and instructional technology.
  • Ability to successfully obtain and maintain correctional facility security clearance.
  • Prior experience working in a correctional or secure setting preferred.
  • Experience teaching adult learners or individuals with diverse educational backgrounds preferred.
  • Experience in Adult Basic Education, High School Equivalency instruction, or workforce training preferred.
  • Familiarity with North Carolina CCR guidelines and reporting requirements preferred.

Preferred Qualifications Physical Demands

The work is primarily performed in a classroom setting within a correctional facility. Work requires compliance with all correctional security procedures, including facility searches, movement restrictions, and security protocols. The employee must maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.

Essential functions of this position require effective communication, reasoning, critical thinking, problem-solving, coordination, interpersonal, and organizational skills. The employee must be able to work effectively within a secure correctional environment while adhering to institutional security procedures and maintaining professional composure.

Medium work: Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Duties require standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, lifting, carrying instructional materials and equipment, operating standard office and classroom technology, and traveling between Wilkes Community College campuses and assigned correctional facilities. The position also requires the ability to navigate correctional facilities, comply with security screening procedures, and respond appropriately to emergency situations in accordance with institutional policies.

Mental Application: Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, and demonstrated emotional stability. Strong critical thinking, adaptability, and creative problem-solving skills are essential, along with the ability to manage a classroom effectively within a secure and highly structured setting.

Salary Grade Salary Salary Range: $46,300 to $50,000 based on education and experience in accordance with the college salary plan.
