Essential duties and responsibilities include providing instruction to students enrolled in English forSpeakers of Other Language (ESOL) classes and/or Adult Basic Education (ABE)/Spanish High School Equivalency (HSE) classes on an as-needed basis; delivering prepared lesson plans and/or adapting existing curriculum to meet student needs during assigned shifts; incorporating computer-based or online learning activities into instruction when applicable; maintaining basic documentation of student attendance and participation for assigned sessions; administering informal assessments or supporting ongoing student evaluation as directed by program staff; communicating relevant student progress, needs, or concerns to the Program Coordinator or designee; referring students to internal support services as appropriate; coordinating with Program Coordinator and instructional team to ensure continuity of instruction; participating in periodic check-ins as needed; attending trainings and staff meetings as available and relevant to scheduled work hours; and performing other related duties as assigned within the scope of per-diem work.
Two years teaching experience in ESOL and/or ABE/HSE preferred; experience delivering or adapting lesson plans in a classroom setting; strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to create an engaging, inclusive, and supportive learning environment; flexibility and responsiveness in a dynamic classroom setting; willingness to go above and beyond program mandates for the benefit of the students; ability to understand the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities; demonstrated commitment to supporting communities who have experienced systemic oppression and bias (e.g. people of color, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, justice involved persons, etc.); bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred or required – dependent upon program needs. Must possess a Bachelor's degree in related field; license to teach with the NYC Department of Education preferred.
