The Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections (IDJC) St. Anthony is seeking an engaging Instructor Specialist Teacher to join our team. This position is located at our on-site school Juniper Hills, a special purpose school accredited through Cognia, at our St. Anthony Facility.

The Instructor Specialist will plan, develop, implement, and evaluate specialized educational programs, provide leadership direction and consultation to instructors and treatment staff, provide individual and group educational programs in academic or vocational areas to youth in a rehabilitation treatment setting, perform related work.

The Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections St. Anthony has regionalized state services for juveniles committed to its custody, making it possible for most juveniles to remain close enough to their communities so parents and other key community members can take part in the juveniles treatment. State juvenile correctional centers are in Lewiston, Nampa, and St. Anthony, and provide a full complement of services for youth who range from 10 to 20 years of age.

Located just 15 minutes from Rexburg, St. Anthony blends outdoor adventure-from massive sand dunes to legendary fishing-with rich pioneer heritage and a tight-knit, welcoming community. Its an ideal spot for nature lovers, history buffs, and those craving small-town hospitality in Idahos rugged beauty.

Responsibilities

  1. Program Delivery and Coordination • Participates as member of treatment team to determine treatment goals • Applies and provides instruction in various educational modalities and platforms in accordance with special education, 504, and programmatic needs as applicable • Serves as liaison to assigned living unit and integrates educational programs with other treatment services • Coordinates student educational goals with staff • Consults with other instructors, program staff to discuss student progress • Consults with staff, parents, and officials regarding student management techniques, academic and behavioral progress

  2. Educational Programs • Determines educational goals, plans, and develops a Course of Study compatible with open-entry, open-exit practices • Utilizes assessment instruments for intervention purposes • Assesses student needs and capabilities • Plans and implements individual educational plans • Determines appropriate instructional methods • Guides peer-group interaction to enhance student learning and problem resolution • Develops course materials • Develops and implements classroom activities • Evaluates student progress • Meets with students regarding progress in meeting their educational goals • Maintains records and prepares reports • Works with special education teachers to meet Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and for students who have special learning needs

Student Guidance • Serves as role model for appropriate social behavior • Encourages and motivates students in developing self-esteem, academic knowledge, and vocational skills • Instructs in living skills • Fosters protection of individual rights and ensures student safety and positive interactions • Intervenes in student conflicts and confrontations • Reports accidents, changes in health, and emergencies • Escorts students on- and off- campus for various activities • Obtains and monitors use of classroom equipment and materials • Willingness to participate in aspects that foster the safety and security of the youth, staff, and facility, including assisting in searches, conducting pat searches, de-escalating youth, and interacting with combative youth.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicant must hold or be eligible to obtain an Idaho Education Credential in accordance with State Department of Education certification standards (see www.sde.idaho.gov/cert-psc/cert)
  • Meet entrance requirements established by the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) academy for correction officers, including: • Be at least 21 years of age • Be eligible for and in good standing to obtain a POST certification within 12 months of hire • Possess a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent • For those that served in the military, must have a discharge indicating honorable, uncharacterized, or general under honorable conditions • Hold a current and valid drivers license in your state of residence • Be a U.S. Citizen • No conviction, withheld judgment, suspicion, or imposed conviction of the following (see POST IDAPA Code 11.11.01 for more information): • A felony • A misdemeanor DUI within the last 2 years or had 2 or more misdemeanor DUI within the last 2 years or had 2 or more misdemeanor DUI offenses within 5 years immediately preceding application • A misdemeanor crime involving domestic violence within the last 5 years preceding this application • A misdemeanor crime of deceit or a misdemeanor sex offense within the last 5 years preceding this application • A misdemeanor drug-related offense within one year immediately preceding this application • No purchase or possession of marijuana, cannabis, hashish, hash oil, or THC in synthetic and natural forms within one year immediately preceding job application
  • Willingness to deal with violence, harassment, threats, verbal abuse, break up fights, control disturbances, and physically restrain offenders
  • Perform searches for contraband and weapons
  • Work alone, unarmed, among unrestricted offenders
  • Work in a secure, locked facility in confined spaces
  • Learn and follow department policies, procedures, rules, and instructions
  • Set aside personal prejudices and be fair
  • Work in high-stress, hostile environments
  • Transport juveniles
  • Become certified in CPR
  • Physical requirements: no hearing, sight, or physical limitations that would prevent performance of duties

  • Workforce Development, Career Technical Education, or Work-Based Learning is counted as a plus

Salary

  • The salary listed is the Departments minimum starting rate for an Instructional Specialist and tiers up from there. New hires can join the Agency at a higher rate (tier) dependent upon relevant work experience and professional endorsement.
