Job Title: STEP Summer Instructor

Department: Science & Technology Entry Program (STEP)

Reports to (title): Assistant Director of STEP/Executive Director of High School Opportunity Programs

Status -- non-exempt

Position Status -- Temp

Hours: 5 in class hours/per week 30-60 minutes per week of meetings preparation time included in stipend Monday through Thursday, Friday (Aug 7)

Position purpose

The instructor is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation and evaluation of online and classroom instruction and related activities. An instructor performs all other duties as directed by program supervisor.

This position may cover multiple topic areas including: Basic Flight, Basic Flight Lab, Avionics, Coding, STEM 3D Design, STEM 3D Design Lab, Test Taking Skills, A&P through Martial Arts, Ethics in Science, Financial Literacy, & Career Development.

Major Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks

  1. to coordinate an instructional course plan for high-school/middle-school enrichment program students and instruct courses;
  2. to create an approved course syllabus and teach all courses at a level that is appropriate for the students assigned;
  3. to keep active at a high level of expertise in the subjects taught and stimulate enthusiasm for those subjects;
  4. to ensure that each program/class contains essential curricular components, has appropriate content and pedagogy and maintains currency;
  5. to keep students informed and updated concerning course content, requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements;
  6. to keep students informed about their progress through the prompt grading of coursework;
  7. to maintain accurate and complete records, including attendance records;
  8. to ensure that assigned classes and tutoring sessions are held as scheduled;
  9. to make suggestions to the program director concerning the improvement of the curriculum in keeping with the objectives of the program;
  10. to participate in program and curriculum review and development and student learning outcomes initiatives;
  11. to incorporate instructional technologies as a mode of lesson delivery;
  12. to refer students to program leadership and counselors as needed.

Education and/or Experience Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in education or fields related to instructional content.

Professional Skills

  • Mastery of subject(s) taught;
  • Excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office;
  • Demonstrated ability to teach using Zoom.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to communicate with students, parents and staff;
  • Ability to collect and interpret data;
  • Ability to understand and follow directions;
  • Ability to resolve conflict among students;

Work environment and physical functions

This position is in an office environment and a hybrid model. Generally, an employee needs to be able to sit, stand and navigate within the office area. The office equipment either individually used or shared with a department is the responsibility of all employees.

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree
  • Experience working with students from historically underrepresented or economically disadvantaged groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach using the D2L learning management system

Compensation

This position will be paid via stipend dependent on educational level achieved:

  • Bachelor's Degree: $1400
  • Master's Degree: $1900
  • PhD: $2400
