Description

Make a meaningful impact as the Lead Substance Use Disorder Counseling Instructor by preparing future professionals to support individuals, families, and communities affected by substance use. In this full-time role, you will bring your professional expertise into the classroom while leading curriculum development, program quality, and alignment with Wisconsin DSPS credentialing requirements. You will guide students through classroom and clinical learning while building strong partnerships with treatment providers and community organizations. This is an opportunity to shape a growing program, mentor emerging professionals, and strengthen the substance use disorder counseling workforce.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities (include, but not limited to)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develop and maintain course curriculum. Align curriculum to departmental, state, and/or other applicable standards and outcomes.
• Plan, deliver and facilitate student learning, including providing ongoing quality feedback to students.
• Assess student attainment of learning outcomes and critical life skills (both formative and summative), at the course, program, and college level.
• Collect, report, analyze, and use data to support continuous improvement at the course, program and college level.
• Use technology to facilitate student learning, college processes, and personal productivity.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
• Participate as a productive member of a team.
• Maintain college learning resources and equipment.
• Participate in recruitment and retention activities.
• Pursue ongoing professional development, maintain occupational competency, and ensure knowledge of current laws and regulations related to the profession(s) in which instruction is provided.
• Support students' clinical experiences by coordinating placements, maintaining relationships with community partners, and ensuring alignment with program and credentialing requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Demonstrated working knowledge of programmatic discipline, curriculum development, effective teaching/learning principles, and evaluation
• Effective interpersonal communication skills - oral, written, active listening, and non-verbal cues
• Strong customer service skills which includes working with individuals from diverse backgrounds
• Ability to manage time, organize work and meet deadlines
• Ability to effectively integrate technology into instructional delivery and assessment
• Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with internal (staff, management, personnel) and external contacts (employers, clients, and vendors)
• Ability to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to work and/or the improvement of processes and/or systems
• Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and/or with minimal supervision
• Ability to prioritize work and adapt to changing priorities
• Intermediate level of proficiency with computer software applications such as word processing, database, spreadsheet, and presentation programs. Knowledge of and familiarity with video-conferencing and technologies associated with adult-centric teaching and learning, as well as within specific programmatic disciplines, which may include web technologies, operating systems, online program tracking platforms, social media platforms, mobile technology tools, and/or AV/multimedia applications and equipment.
• A strong commitment to the rights surrounding the participation and access of all individuals to a full and independent life.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Master's degree in related field with licensure as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Professional Counselor (LPC), Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). An equivalent combination of related education, occupational experience, and licensure may be considered.
• Current licensure as a Substance Abuse Counselor (SAC) or Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) preferred.
• Twenty-four (24) months of verifiable occupational experience working in a Substance Abuse Counselor role. One year (2,000 hours) shall be within the previous five (5) years. One year of related occupational experience may be waived if the candidate has at least two (2) years of post-secondary teaching experience in early childhood education within five (5) years.
• Experience supervising substance use disorder counseling students in clinical settings is preferred.
• Attain and maintain a WTCS teaching certificate.
• Current Wisconsin Department of Transportation certification to teach Group Dynamics and the Multiple Offender Program is preferred, or the ability to meet certification requirements and obtain approval following hire.

Supplemental Information

The Instructor - Substance Use Disorder Counseling supports the School of Protective and Human Services with an estimated start date of November 16th, 2026.

This position requires Wisconsin residence.

Hours

This is a full-time instructor position on a flexible year-round calendar. Teaching assignments include variable hours, including days, evenings, and/or weekends.

Interviews

Finalists will be invited to interview and present a teaching demonstration on Monday, October 26th, 2026. Candidates will be notified via email if selected for interviews.
