Job Summary:

Perform decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, processing and sterilization of all surgical instrumentation, scopes, patient care equipment requiring sterilization, and supplies.

Performing monitoring of the effectiveness of all sterilization processes according to Policies and Procedures and by following the AAMI, AORN, CDC, and OSHA guidelines

 

Accountabilities:

• 1. Demonstrates knowledge and technical skills in decontamination and processing of instruments, scopes, equipment and supplies.

• a. Decontamination of surgical instrumentation. Patient care equipment and supplies is done according to Policy and Procedure following Manufacturer Recommendations and OSHA, AORN, AAMI Guidelines.

• b. Safely operates all decontamination equipment according to Manufacturers

• instructions.

• 2. Demonstrates knowledge of surgical instrumentation and technical expertise in identification of, care and handling of, and inspection for proper working order.

• a. Prepares and assembles all instrument trays (OR, L&D, ED & SPD, Etc.) according to count Sheets, making sure the instrument trays are complete or appropriately marked with the missing items.

• b. Inspects all instrumentation for damage, sharpness and proper working order, making sure that all Instrumentation placed on trays are safe to use.

• c. Removes all damaged instruments from trays and replaces them with appropriate instrumentation.

• d. Utilizes proper packaging techniques when preparing instrumentation for processing. Appropriately uses wrappers, peel packs and containerized systems following packaging Policy and Procedure, AAMI and AORN guidelines.

• 3. Demonstrates knowledge and technical skills in operating sterilization equipment.

• a. Safely operates all sterilization equipment following Manufacturer’s instructions.

• b. Utilizes proper sterilization techniques when using steam sterilization, ethylene oxide (eto) and sterrad, following Policy and Procedure, AAMI, AORN, and OSHA Guidelines.

• c. Conducts biological monitoring of all sterilization equipment, following Policy and Procedure.

• d. Maintains appropriate records for sterilization, biological monitoring and ETO monitoring according to Policy and Procedure, AAMI, AORN and OSHA Guidelines.

• 4. Demonstrates knowledge of Standard Precautions.

• a. Follows the proper workflow pattern.

• b. Appropriately handles all contaminated instruments, equipment and supplies.

• c. Wears appropriate personal protective equipment when performing all decontamination tasks.

• d. Transports all contaminated items in such a manner as to prevent cross contamination of people and environment.

• 5. Demonstrates positive team relationship and communication skills and contributes to create a cohesive and productive environment.

• a. Utilizes good interpersonal and communication skills when dealing with patients, nursing staff, Physicians, co-workers and all of our customers.

• b. Effectively communicates all pertinent information to co-workers.

• c. Demonstrates initiative in completion of assigned work and effectively works with little or no supervision.

• d. Cooperates with and assists associates in completion of assigned work when able.

• e. Follows staffing guidelines. In the interest of patient care, responds to needs within the department by cooperating with reassignment and later hour scheduling and weekend work.

• f. Maintain technological competence through participation in ongoing in-services, seminars and training sessions.

 

• Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures

• Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

 

Qualifications:

  • H.S Diploma/ GED Required
  • one year in a lead or charge role preferred

 

Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications:

  • Certification from IAHCSMM (CRCST) OR CBSPD (CSPDT) required
