Insurance Coverage Attorney

Gray, Duffy, Eisenbaum & Lee, LLP (GDEL) is a respected boutique litigation defense firm with offices in Woodland Hills and Redwood City. Our practice focuses on civil litigation defense, including insurance defense, personal injury, construction defect, and employment litigation matters. The firm is known for its collaborative environment, experienced attorneys, and commitment to delivering high-quality legal representation in active, fast-moving litigation.

GDEL is seeking an Insurance Coverage Attorney to join our Woodland Hills office. This attorney will advise clients on a broad range of commercial and personal lines insurance coverage matters and, when necessary, represent clients in insurance coverage litigation. The position offers the opportunity to work on sophisticated matters involving multiple jurisdictions and a diverse range of underlying claims.

Candidates with an existing book of business are welcome to apply; however, a portable book of business is highly preferred but not required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Insurance Coverage Analysis

  • Analyze insurance policies and evaluate coverage issues involving:
    • Commercial General Liability
    • Commercial Umbrella and Excess
    • Commercial Auto
    • Homeowners
    • Personal Auto
    • Personal Umbrella
  • Prepare coverage opinions and reservation of rights, denial, and other coverage position letters.
  • Interpret policy language and applicable law across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Research and analyze complex legal issues affecting insurance coverage.

Litigation

  • Represent insurers and other clients in insurance coverage litigation.
  • Manage matters through all phases of litigation, including pleadings, discovery, motion practice, mediation, trial, and appeal, as applicable.
  • Handle coverage disputes arising from a variety of underlying claims, including:
    • Construction defect
    • Product liability
    • Employment-related claims
    • Landlord-tenant and habitability matters
    • Intellectual property disputes
    • Entertainment-related claims
    • Complex civil litigation involving allegations of human trafficking, sexual abuse, or other sensitive matters

Client Service

  • Communicate legal analyses and strategic recommendations clearly and effectively.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Collaborate with attorneys and staff to provide responsive, high-quality legal services.
  • Manage multiple matters while meeting applicable deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Licensure

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited or California-accredited law school.
  • Active membership in the State Bar of California in good standing.

Experience

Qualified candidates should demonstrate experience in one or more of the following:

  • Insurance coverage analysis and policy interpretation.
  • Drafting insurance coverage opinions and coverage position letters.
  • Commercial and/or personal lines insurance coverage.
  • Insurance coverage litigation or related civil litigation.
  • Multi-jurisdictional legal analysis.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong legal research, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain a minimum annual billable-hour requirement of 1,800 hours, subject to firm policies and business needs
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and sound professional judgment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant level of insurance coverage experience.
  • Experience with first-party and third-party insurance coverage matters.
  • Experience involving insurance bad faith or extra-contractual liability.
  • Trial experience.
  • Admission to one or more United States District Courts.
  • Admission in additional state jurisdictions.
  • Professional liability insurance experience.
  • Portable book of business (preferred, not required).

Compensation & Benefits

Salary Range: $150,000 – $200,000 annually. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, qualifications, skills, education, business needs, and other job-related factors permitted by law.

Additional Compensation:

Eligibility for quarterly performance-based bonus opportunities. Bonus eligibility and amounts are determined under the firm’s bonus program and are based on performance metrics, including billable hours, productivity, quality of work, client service, and other job-related factors.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, in-office position based in the firm’s Woodland Hills office. The role involves active participation in litigation matters, including court appearances, depositions, client meetings, and other case-related proceedings.

This position primarily involves office-based legal work and requires the ability to communicate effectively, operate standard office equipment and computer systems, and perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
