    Insurance & Risk Management Director

    Position Overview

    The Insurance & Risk Management Director serves as the organization's lead expert for insurance and enterprise risk management, providing both strategic leadership and day-to-day oversight across multiple operating entities. This individual is responsible for developing and managing insurance programs, risk financing strategies, surety relationships, and captive insurance operations while partnering closely with executive and operational leaders throughout the business.

    This role requires deep experience in property & casualty insurance, surety, and contractual risk transfer, along with a strong understanding of construction-related risk exposures. The successful candidate will be comfortable working directly with brokers, carriers, attorneys, and senior leadership while guiding a team of insurance professionals and driving enterprise-wide risk initiatives.

    Reporting to the Vice President of Insurance & Risk Management, the position plays a key role in protecting the organization from operational, financial, and contractual risks while ensuring insurance programs remain aligned with business objectives.

    Key Responsibilities

    Insurance Program Leadership

    • Direct and oversee large-scale property & casualty insurance programs, including general liability, workers' compensation, commercial auto, property, umbrella/excess liability, professional liability, environmental liability, cyber, management liability, and builder's risk.
    • Lead annual insurance renewals, including market strategy, carrier negotiations, program structure evaluation, and coverage improvements.
    • Identify opportunities to enhance coverage while controlling total cost of risk.
    • Maintain strong partnerships with brokers, insurers, legal counsel, and risk management service providers.
    • Monitor emerging risks and insurance market trends to support long-term planning and decision-making.

    Surety Management

    • Manage corporate surety programs and bonding relationships.
    • Work closely with brokers and sureties to maintain adequate bonding capacity and favorable terms that support business growth.
    • Review project-related bonding requirements and ensure alignment with organizational objectives.

    Captive Insurance Oversight

    • Serve as the primary liaison with captive management partners and oversee ongoing administration activities.
    • Coordinate regulatory filings, financial reporting, compliance obligations, and governance requirements across applicable jurisdictions.
    • Manage annual captive planning and renewal activities, including actuarial reviews, reserve analyses, feasibility assessments, and premium funding strategies.
    • Partner with auditors, regulators, and captive stakeholders on audits, board reporting, and strategic initiatives.
    • Evaluate captive performance and recommend enhancements to structure, capitalization, and risk retention strategies.

    Enterprise Risk Management

    • Develop and implement risk management frameworks and mitigation strategies across multiple business operations.
    • Establish policies, procedures, and best practices that strengthen risk awareness and accountability throughout the organization.
    • Review and advise on insurance and surety requirements within construction contracts and related agreements.
    • Collaborate with operations, safety, legal, finance, and executive leadership teams to address risk-related issues and support business objectives.
    • Act as a trusted advisor on insurance and risk management matters across all operating units.

    Financial Oversight & Analytics

    • Manage insurance budgets and monitor overall cost of risk.
    • Perform financial analysis, forecasting, reconciliations, and reporting related to insurance programs.
    • Develop strategies to improve insurance cost allocation and recovery processes.
    • Monitor claim activity and loss trends, identifying opportunities for improvement and corrective action.
    • Prepare and deliver risk management reporting for executive leadership and board-level audiences.
    • Track program performance and provide insights that support strategic decision-making.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Education & Credentials

    • Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business, Economics, Safety, or a related discipline preferred.
    • Professional designations such as CPCU, ARM, or CRM are highly valued.
    • Active Property & Casualty insurance license is a plus.

    Experience

    • Seven or more years of progressive experience in insurance, risk management, or related fields.
    • Strong background supporting construction, manufacturing, logistics, or similarly complex operational environments.
    • Demonstrated success designing, placing, and managing sophisticated P&C insurance programs.
    • Experience overseeing surety programs and maintaining carrier and broker relationships.
    • Familiarity with loss-sensitive, captive, and fronted insurance structures.
    • Knowledge of workers' compensation, liability, and property claims management practices.

    Skills & Competencies

    • Strong understanding of insurance policy language and coverage interpretation.
    • Ability to review and evaluate contractual insurance and surety requirements.
    • Advanced analytical and financial modeling capabilities, including strong Excel proficiency.
    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex insurance topics to both technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Proven leadership and project management abilities.
    • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities simultaneously.
    • Strategic thinker with a collaborative approach and strong sense of ownership and accountability.
