About Carey & Co

Carey & Co partners exclusively with nonprofits across various industries, providing expert support in finance, HR, fundraising, and technology. Our mission is to empower nonprofit organizations by streamlining administrative functions, ensuring financial clarity, and supporting operational excellence.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Interim Chief Financial Officer to step into fractional and short-term engagements supporting Carey & Co and our nonprofit clients. This role requires a seasoned financial leader who can move quickly into complex environments and manage government and restricted funding with confidence. The ideal candidate has deep, hands-on experience with city, state, and federal contracts, and can bring immediate credibility and stability to an organization during a leadership transition.

Key Responsibilities

  • Restricted & Government Funding: Oversee compliance and reporting for restricted funds, including city, state, and federal contracts and grants, ensuring adherence to funder-specific requirements and regulations (e.g., 2 CFR 200 / Uniform Guidance).
  • Financial Management: Lead financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting for the duration of the engagement.
  • Compliance & Risk Management: Oversee accounting practices, audits, tax filings, and regulatory compliance, ensuring adherence to GAAP and nonprofit financial regulations.
  • Internal Controls: Assess and strengthen internal controls and financial procedures, particularly around grant and contract compliance.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare financial statements, KPIs, and cash flow analyses for leadership and, where applicable, funders.
  • Transition Leadership: Provide steady, credible financial leadership during interim periods, onboarding smoothly and transferring knowledge effectively at engagement close.
  • Vendor & Partner Management: Manage relationships with banks, auditors, accountants, and external financial service providers as needed.
  • Team Leadership: Oversee finance staff and/or external vendors for the duration of the engagement.
Requirements
  • 8+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, including direct experience managing restricted funding — specifically city, state, and federal government contracts.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit financial management, GAAP standards, and fund accounting.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Excel; familiarity with additional ERP systems a plus.
  • Proven ability to step into interim or fractional roles and deliver results quickly with minimal ramp-up.
  • Available for hourly, contract (1099) engagements, with flexibility across multiple assignments.
  • CPA, MBA, or equivalent advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Candidates located in the New York Metro area and open to working onsite for clients as needed are preferred, but candidates located elsewhere will also be considered.
Benefits

Why Join Carey & Co?

  • Opportunity to support mission-driven organizations making an impact.
  • High-visibility interim leadership roles with meaningful influence.
  • Flexible, engagement-based work structure.
  • Collaborative and supportive team culture.
  • Competitive hourly compensation based on experience.

If you are an experienced financial leader with restricted funding and government contract expertise, and you're ready for flexible, high-impact interim work, we would love to hear from you!
