Interim Controller (Consultant)
We are currently seeking candidates for an Interim Controller opportunity with a well-established investment organization located in New York City. This consultant will step into a hands-on accounting leadership role, providing immediate support during a transition period while helping ensure the firm's accounting, reporting, and audit-related activities continue to operate efficiently. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in both fund accounting and management company accounting within an investment environment.

This is a 3+ month contract position paying between $115-$125/hour (depending on experience).

This role supports a hybrid work model consisting of 3-4 days on-site per week in New York City.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide hands-on accounting leadership across both the management company and investment-related accounting activities throughout the engagement.
  • Act as the primary resource for audit-related matters by coordinating deliverables and partnering closely with external auditors and service providers during the audit cycle.
  • Support financial reporting requirements by overseeing close activities, reviewing supporting schedules, and ensuring compliance with applicable accounting standards and reporting requirements.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders and third-party providers to monitor fund activity, capital transactions, expense allocations, and other investment accounting matters.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, strengthen internal controls, and enhance financial reporting and operational efficiencies.
  • Assist senior leadership with ad hoc financial analyses, governance-related materials, and broader accounting and operational initiatives.
  • Manage day-to-day accounting responsibilities while helping facilitate a smooth transition of knowledge and responsibilities to the permanent hire, when applicable.
  • Perform additional accounting and financial reporting responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications:
  • 6+ years of progressive accounting experience, including time spent in an accounting leadership capacity such as Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager.
  • Required experience within both fund accounting and management company accounting, preferably within investment management or alternative investment environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP, corporate financial reporting requirements, and external audit processes.A 
  • CPA designation is strongly preferred.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel capabilities and familiarity with investment accounting, fund administration, or financial reporting systems are highly desirable.
  • Ability to quickly integrate into a lean finance organization and effectively manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Previous experience working within investment management, private investment, family office, endowment, hedge fund, venture capital, or similar organizations is highly preferred.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills with a hands-on approach to problem-solving and exceptional attention to detail.
