Building: Intermediate School

Posting Description: Intermediate School Nurse (Gr 3-5)

The school nurse supports student success by providing health care through assessment, intervention, and follow-up for all children within the school setting. The school nurse addresses the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of students and supports their achievement in the learning process. The ideal candidate will be compassionate, autonomous, a team player, flexible, strong communicator and have strong triage skills.

Reports to: Building Principal

Terms of Employment: 10-month Position

Salary: Commensurate with degree level and experience

Minimum Qualifications: BSN, 3 years recent nursing experience with preference for Delaware School Nurse certification, Pediatrics or Triage experience. Has current Delaware RN Nursing License or has compact state RN license, current CPR and AED certification.

Professional Expectations:

  • Conduct state-mandated health screenings, and, in collaboration with school counselors, mental health screening procedures
  • Monitor health and immunizations records to ensure compliance with state health regulations
  • Maintain proper documentation of all health records, encounters and provide follow up with parents and medical providers, as necessary
  • Assess the condition and treatment needs for injured or ill students, faculty/staff
  • Administer medication as necessary, in accordance with best medical practices, policies, and state laws
  • Communicate to parents any need for a student's referral to a physician for evaluation and/or treatment, and document said communication
  • Collaborate with athletic trainers, school counselor, Human Resources and others to assess health/safety hazards and ensure the health and well-being of students, faculty and staff
  • Maintain confidentiality and limit the sharing of information with faculty and staff on a need-to-know basis
  • Develop and implement student Individual Health Plans
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of communicable diseases and associated CDC recommendations, school health laws and regulation, and standards of nursing
  • Actively participate in school safety plans that address school violence, bullying and emergencies that may occur at school
  • Assist in making decisions related to the delegation of healthcare tasks as directed by state laws and professional practice guidance
  • Serve as consultant with other school professionals, such as food service personnel, physical education teacher and school counselors
  • Serve as liaison between school personnel, family and community healthcare providers, to ensure a healthy school environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned (i.e. field trips, back to school night attendance and meet the teacher nights)
  • To obtain Delaware School Nurse Certification within allotted time frame from the Delaware Department of Education, if currently doesn't have this certification.
