A Teacher Intern at Merrill Area Public Schools will support a dynamic learning environment by conducting scheduled classes, engaging students, and reinforcing district curriculum standards while collaborating with a Cooperating Teacher. Responsibilities include assessing student progress, maintaining accurate records, and fostering a safe, respectful classroom setting. The intern will collaborate with staff, assist with individualized learning and behavior plans, and prepare classroom activities for substitutes if absent. Familiarity with digital tools, particularly iPads and Google platforms, is preferred to enhance student engagement. Professional growth and active participation in district meetings are also essential components of this role.

All expectations identified through the Wisconsin Improvement Program Handbook about Teacher Internships will be followed throughout the semester Teacher Internship experience.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

In addition to and including essential duties performed by a teacher.

  • Creating a conducive, engaging, and inclusive classroom environment that aligns with district and state educational standards.
  • Assessing student progress, providing feedback, grades and progress reports, and communicating with parents as needed.
  • Keeping accurate records and enforcing classroom rules consistently.
  • Collaborating with cooperating teacher, teacher aides, parent volunteers, and other teachers.
  • Developing lesson plans for substitutes and maintaining a commitment to ongoing professional growth.
  • Supporting curriculum development and promoting effective teaching practices.
  • Assisting in the implementation of individualized student behavior and academic plans, including IEPs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Teacher Intern supervises students in their assigned class and/or supervisory area.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move around the classroom and school building for extended periods.
  • Capacity to bend, crouch, or kneel to interact with students at their level.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to handle teaching materials, operate technology, and use office equipment.
  • Visual and auditory ability to read materials, monitor classroom activities, and respond to questions or safety signals.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, such as books, supplies, or small equipment.

Qualifications:

In progress for a bachelors/masters degree and seeking Licenseure by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction in assigned subjects and/or levels of instruction. Proficiency in subject area being taught. Must have strong technology background. Candidate must seek intern license upon hire.
