OVERVIEW

The Intern for Business Analytics provides hands-on experience supporting process improvement and operational optimization initiatives using Lean Six Sigma (LSS), Business Process Management (BPM), and exploratory data analysis techniques. The role reports to the Manager of Data Analytics on the Business Analytics team and includes completing a process-focused analytical project while supporting ongoing initiatives across the organization.

This is a hybrid position based in Knoxville, TN, with a combination of in-office and remote work.

Project Overview

TeamHealths Clinical Strategic Pillars help to define, promote, and deploy service-line operational excellence in:

  • Clinical Quality
  • Patient Safety
  • Risk
  • Clinic Operations
  • Patient Experience
  • Management and Leadership

Across the healthcare industry there continues to be a strong need for clinicians to fill-in areas where demand for services exceed the availability of labor. This can be felt from staffing shortages or lack of supply to work in specific areas. To counteract this shortage, temporary labor, or Locums, is used at a higher cost compared to a full-time or part-time contracted position. Locums and the additional costs incurred with the temporary demand are referred to as Premium Labor and can contribute to the overall increase in costs in operations for healthcare facilities.

The intern will support efforts to analyze staffing workflows, identify drivers of premium labor utilization, map current-state processes, and recommend opportunities to reduce unnecessary cost while supporting quality and patient outcomes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support business processes improvement projects from initial concept through the discovery phase, contributing to strategies focused on optimization and standardization.
  • Assist in developing process maps, conducting gap analysis, and creating documentation to identify opportunities for increased efficiency and consistency.

  • Assist with data gathering and basic statistical analysis (e.g., descriptive statistics, regression) to support process improvement recommendations.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers and Data/Business Analysts across various project phases.

QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION

  • Open to rising juniors, seniors, or graduate students pursuing a degree in Business Analytics, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Industrial Engineering, or similar fields preferred.
