Position Summary

The Construction Management Intern will gain hands-on experience across multiple areas of the road construction industry. This internship is designed to provide broad exposure to field operations, project management, production, and business functions while working alongside experienced professionals in safety, quality, operations, and construction.

Interns will participate in meaningful projects and rotational experiences that develop technical knowledge, leadership skills, and an understanding of how roadway construction projects are planned, managed, and executed from start to finish.

What You'll Learn

Throughout the internship, you will gain exposure to key aspects of roadway construction, including:

Project Management & Estimating

  • Learn how construction projects are sourced, estimated, bid, and awarded.
  • Assist with project planning, budgeting, and scheduling activities.
  • Gain experience working alongside estimators and project managers during the bidding process.
  • Learn the fundamentals of contract and subcontract administration.
  • Develop an understanding of project costs, productivity, and project performance metrics.

Asphalt Plant Operations
  • Observe and support daily asphalt plant operations.
  • Work alongside plant personnel to understand production processes, quality standards, and safety procedures.
  • Gain exposure to scale operations, material handling, plant maintenance, and equipment operations.
  • Learn how asphalt production supports roadway construction projects.

Construction Field Operations
  • Work with construction and preparation crews on active jobsites.
  • Learn how crews mobilize, plan, and execute roadway construction projects.
  • Observe field leadership and daily jobsite coordination activities.
  • Gain exposure to construction equipment and learn its role in project execution.
  • Develop an understanding of jobsite safety, quality control, and operational efficiency.

Business & Operations Management
  • Partner with operations and finance teams to understand the business side of construction.
  • Learn how workload planning, resource allocation, and scheduling impact project success.
  • Assist with operational reporting and performance tracking.
  • Gain exposure to job costing, budgeting, profit and loss statements, and key business metrics.

Aggregate & Materials Operations
  • Spend time at aggregate production facilities to learn how construction materials are produced and supplied.
  • Understand the logistics involved in transporting materials to construction projects.
  • Learn about the various materials used in roadway construction and their applications.
  • Gain insight into the relationship between aggregate production and overall project success.

Required Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Engineering, Business Management, or a related field.
  • Interest in heavy civil construction, roadway construction, site development, infrastructure, or related industries.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to work in both field and office environments.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous construction, engineering, manufacturing, or outdoor work experience.
  • Basic knowledge of construction equipment, materials, or project management principles.

Physical Requirements

To successfully perform the responsibilities of this role, individuals must be able to:

  • Sit, stand, and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Frequently navigate active construction sites and uneven terrain.
  • Occasionally climb ladders, stairs, and work platforms.
  • Bend, stoop, crouch, and reach as needed.
  • Lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and rain.
  • Maintain awareness of surroundings while working near moving equipment and machinery.
  • Possess the visual abilities necessary to safely perform field inspections and observe construction activities.

Work Environment

This position involves a combination of office and field-based work. Interns should expect to:

  • Spend significant time on active construction sites, asphalt plants, and aggregate facilities.
  • Work outdoors in a variety of weather and environmental conditions.
  • Be exposed to construction-related noise, dust, vibration, and moving equipment.
  • Work near heavy machinery and industrial equipment while following established safety procedures.
  • Travel locally to project sites and operational facilities as needed.
  • Occasionally work flexible hours based on project schedules and business needs.
