Intern - FUSE Program

Pay rate: $16.0750 per hour

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Full or Part time available)

Desired start date: May 1, 2026

Position Summary

Under general supervision of the FUSE Office Manager, and in coordination with the FUSE Program Manager, this position performs professional social service work, both in the office, in the community, and within client homes. The FUSE Program serves those individuals, aged 18+ who have intersected most frequently with two or more high-need/high-cost systems of care within McLean County (emergency departments, homeless shelters, justice system).

Work requires individuals who can maintain calm, even in stressful situations. Work follows principles of recovery, social service professional standards, and County policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Answers, screens, and handles any inquiries by phone or in person
• Advocate for client needs, as appropriate
• Accompany clients to court
• Engages in outreach to potential new participants, as a representative of the FUSE Program
• Communicate with clients in a professional, friendly, courteous, and welcoming manner
• Maintain and protect confidentiality
• Performs related work as required
• Participate in a tour of the McLean County Jail
• Complete one shift as a rider with the Bloomington and Normal Police departments

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of mental health programming, recovery resources and available community resources.
• Ability to deal compassionately and tactfully with individuals with chronic mental illness concerns; able to resolve conflicts and problems.
• Knowledge of methods for advocacy of client needs.
• Knowledge of the criminal justice system processes and dynamics.
• Knowledge of the impact of involvement of the criminal justice system on recidivism, mental health, and the intersection with homelessness.
• Knowledge of community service and law enforcement agencies for coordination and collaboration.
• Preferred knowledge of housing, recovery, and employment supports.
• Skill in effective listening and communicating, problem solving and teamwork.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to work with and maintain confidential information in an atmosphere of loyalty and trust.
• Ability to work independently and efficiently.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all strata of the population, the legal profession, branches of the criminal justice system, community service personnel, other employees, and supervisors.
• Knowledge of general office procedures and the operation of standard office equipment, including telephone, computer, and Microsoft Office programs.
• Ability to interact with the public and provide information and assistance and support in a polite and efficient manner, both in person and on the telephone.
• Ability to develop a working knowledge of the County's behavioral health services and programs and community resources.
• Ability to empathize and understand individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis.
• Ability to read, understand, and apply County policies.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, other employees, clients, and community members.
• Ability to maintain calm in stressful situations, or when others are not calm.
• Ability to work with clients from varied socio-economic backgrounds

Required Qualifications

• Enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in a related field (social work, psychology, criminal justice, human development, counseling, or a related human service field).
• Must be able to pass DCFS background checks, Health Care Registry background checks, Illinois State Police Sex Offender check and other background checks as deemed appropriate by the department.

Physical Attributes/Demands

This position requires activities such as sitting, walking, standing, bending, stooping, climbing stairs and lifting light to medium objects, and operating office equipment.

Work Environment

The work is performed in a health care facility (outpatient behavioral health clinic setting) and could involve exposure to body fluid, cleaning chemicals, air borne diseases, and emotionally labile patients. Latex gloves or facial masks may be worn. This work is also done within client homes and in the community.
