Description

NATURE OF WORK

The City of Sunrise is seeking a part time intern with a background in Public Administration and a strong interest in Human Resources Management. This is an internship within the Human Resources Department primarily dealing with municipal administrative and clerical functions, carrying out research projects and conducting independent studies. There will also be a great deal of hands-on experience with other disciplines of the municipality including recruitment, compensation, data analysis, employee/community engagement.

POSITION TYPE

Part time, paid Internship or "for credit" Internship:

  • Hours: Up to 26 hours per week
  • Paid internship rate is $15 per hour
  • Length of assignment: Up to 12 months

Examples of Duties

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

  • Administers assigned clerical support functions, such as recruitment, classification review, compensation studies, employment analysis, leave and benefits administration.
  • Collects and analyzes data.
  • Benchmark assessments.
  • Track trends and developments in assigned functional areas.
  • Conducts studies, performs research and prepares reports.
  • Participates in working groups.
  • Ensures compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Manages special projects.
  • Develops and/or assists in the implementation of new programs or enhancements to existing programs, and in operations analysis and recommendations for organizational structure.
  • Actively takes part in the advancement and promotion of the City while supporting and meeting the needs of customers, both internally and externally.
  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Must be currently enrolled on a full or part time basis at an accredited college or university in a Bachelors or Masters program, majoring in Human Resources or Public Administration or closely related field; or a recent graduate from an accredited college/university possessing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in the fields of study outlined.
  • PROOF OF CURRENT ENROLLMENT OR GRADUATION MUST BE SUBMITTED AS AN ATTACHMENT WITH APPLICATION. (Applications without attached proof of education will not be processed for consideration.)
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel required (Must pass Basic Word & Excel Assessment)
  • Must possess excellent research and communication skills.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Learn the daily business of operations in a municipal Human Resources department.
  • Gain familiarity with the organizational structure and policies and procedures of the City of Sunrise.
  • Learn various aspects of employee benefit concepts, collective bargaining agreements, survey analysis and classification studies.
  • Reinforce Human Resource Management knowledge and gain a greater understanding of various related disciplines including Compensation, Recruitment, Employee/Labor Relations and Organizational Development.
  • Learn how to effectively communicate with various internal departments and external agencies.
  • Gain professional skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with others, professional conduct, government ethics and general operations of a transformational Human Resources Department.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must obtain a valid Florida drivers license prior to hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical:

  • Light physical effort in sedentary to light work, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials up to twenty (20) pounds. Descending and climbing stairways and extended periods of sitting and standing may be required.

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment and data center rooms and closets with some travel to different sites; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including but not limited to evenings, weekends and holidays.

Sensory:

  • The ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing

  • Some knowledge of principles and procedures relating to Human Resources and Public Administration.
  • Some knowledge of theories, principles and procedures relating to position classification and job analysis.

  • Ability to interpret and explain Human Resources rules and regulations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, the public and staff members.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating qualifications of applications for positions.
  • Ability to prepare complete narrative and statistical reports.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and persuasively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to carry out complex oral and written instructions.
