Job Purpose
Progress Rail Services Corporation, a Caterpillar Company and a leading provider of services to the Railroad industry in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil, seeks a MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER for their Independence, MO facility. The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for carrying out duties for the engineering department, including design, research, prototyping, engineering documentation, estimating and participating in process improvement activities. The successful candidate will report directly to the manager of the team assigned and will collaborate with other departments (such as purchasing, operations, program management and manufacturing) on ongoing production and R&D projects. The individual in this position is expected to evaluate, select, and apply state-of-the-art design techniques that meet standardized procedures, and railroad standards using sound engineering judgment.

• Creates robust mechanical designs using 3D modeling tools (SolidWorks).
• Develops custom train inspection solutions tailored to customer requirements.
• Builds and assembles prototype hardware to validate new concepts.
• Contributes to the design of advanced infrared scanning systems for train inspection.
• Drives and supports engineering change order efforts.
• Produces high-quality design packages, test reports, and engineering documentation.
• Investigates and resolves root causes of complex engineering issues.

• Coordinates cross-functional efforts to meet departmental objectives and timelines

Qualifications and Experience
• Experience with reading and understanding technical drawings and wiring diagrams
• Knowledge of geometry, system relations, and GD&T
• Strong communication, analytical, interpersonal and organizational skills
• Strong proficiency with MS Office tools, especially Excel
• Experience with Solidworks CAD software
Preferred Experience:
• AutoCAD
• Some electromechanical design experience and knowledge
