Department Information

The Joint Budget Committee (JBC) is made up of six elected members of the state legislature who are tasked with developing the annual state budget. The Joint Budget Committee Staff is a nonpartisan legislative agency that provides objective research, analysis, and recommendations to help the JBC and legislature write the state budget. JBC staff have a unique and rewarding opportunity to contribute to public policy.

Description of Job

Primary responsibilities include reviewing the management, operations, and fiscal needs of state agencies to develop recommendations for the JBC. The office is seeking two part-time assistants who will support this process, develop issue briefs on specified topics impacting state agencies, and present these issues to the JBC in public meetings. Assistants will also work on research that informs evidence-based policy choices and perform administrative l tasks within the office.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Assistants may qualify for course credit based on institutional academic requirements.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Background in research, data analysis, economics, or finance;

  • Interest in public policy, non-partisan work, and/or budget issues;

  • Strong research, writing, and presentation skills; and

  • Experience working with Excel, Google Suite, and/or other databases.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university;

  • Coursework in public policy and administration or a related field; and

  • An interest in working in state politics and government in the United States.

Supplemental Information

Compensation and Schedule:

Assistants will be compensated at a rate of $22.00 per hour, will receive a $10.00 per day travel stipend, and must be available to work 20 hours per week between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.

This is an in-person position from September 14, 2026, through December 18, 2026, with the potential for some remote work.

There may be an option to extend the position through mid-May 2027, depending on interest and need.
