Department:

The Immigration Services for Students and Scholars (ISSS) is housed within the Office of Global Engagement. ISSS provides comprehensive immigration support for students and scholars at the University of Mississippi.

Substitution Statement: An equivalent combination of related experience and education may be considered for this role. Substitutions of the required experience or education will be assessed on a 1:1 substitution basis.

Job Summary:

Provides specialized student support to international students and international study abroad students. Incumbents in this job classification are responsible for providing immigration advising services and new student orientation to meet the needs of the international student population. The International Advisor problem solves a variety of complex immigration issues requiring considerable knowledge of immigration rules and regulations. Incumbents work independently with decisions impacting students’ educational goals.

Federal law requires DSOs and AROs to update and maintain SEVIS records for F, J, and M students, and SEVP guidance states that DSOs and AROs must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents and regularly employed members of the school administration.

Job Description:

  • Advise students on immigration regulations, institutional procedures, and maintenance of lawful status.

  • Create, update, and maintain accurate SEVIS records and immigration documents.

  • Advise students on employment eligibility and application processes, including on-campus employment, OPT, CPT, STEM OPT, and Academic Training.

  • Support university compliance with federal student reporting requirements.

  • Develop and maintain immigration-focused student communications.

  • Collaborate with campus offices as necessary for immigration compliance.

This position is housed within Immigration Services for Students and Scholars under the Office of Global Engagement. No prior immigration advising experience is required. Preferred qualifications include strong organizational, problem-solving, written communication, and interpersonal skills; attention to detail; the ability to interpret and communicate complex regulations; and an interest in supporting international students and scholars. Familiarity with international education, student services, federal immigration regulations, or university compliance is beneficial but not required.

Because the position will serve as a Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer, applicants must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents and must meet all federal eligibility requirements for those roles.

Applicants must submit a resume and cover letter describing their interest in the position and any relevant education, skills, or experience.
