Department: Building Inspections Reports To: Building Official

Summary: The Summer Intern position offers students and early-career professionals the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience in municipal government. Interns will assist with assigned projects, support daily operations, and develop professional skills while working under the guidance of City staff.

The Summer Intern assigned to Building Inspections will support daily operations and assist with departmental projects, gaining hands-on experience in reviewing plans for compliance with city building codes. The intern will participate in inspections of buildings undergoing construction, alteration, or repair to ensure compliance.

Essential Functions:Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Reviews plans and specifications for compliance with city building codes; annotates corrections on plans in accordance with standards established by the Building Code, Plumbing Code, Mechanical Code, National Electric Code, and Fire Prevention Code.
  • Assists in special projects for the Building Official, Assistant Building Official, and Development Services Manager.
  • Participates in the inspection of buildings in the process of construction, alteration, or repair to ensure compliance with the various codes.
  • Assists in ensuring that customer service issues are properly addressed and resolved.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:Must be at least 18 years of age. Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or technical program in construction, engineering, architecture, or a related field is required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • State and federal regulations governing planning, zoning, municipal services, and urban development.
  • Thorough knowledge of all major types of building construction, materials, methods, and engineering practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of municipal building and related ordinances.
  • Thorough knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and mechanical practices, and basic fire prevention in respect to the construction or modification of all types of structures.

License and certification requirements:A valid Driver's License is required.

Physical demands and working environments: Interns will work up to 40 hours per week. Schedule may vary based on departmental needs and availability. Work is performed in an office, field, or operational setting, depending on assignment. May include sitting, standing, walking, or light physical activity


Internship Duration: Temporary, seasonal position (Summer Internship Program). Start and end dates will be determined by the department and HR.
