    This position is expected to start January or February 2027 and continue through Winter/Spring term (ending approximately May 2027) or continuing into Summer 2027 if available and there is an opportunity to do so. We ask for a minimum of 12 weeks, full-time (40 hours/week) and on-site, for most internships. Our internship program is for students who are actively enrolled in an academic program. Recent graduates seeking employment after graduation and not returning to school should apply for full-time positions, not internships.

    International Students: If your work authorization is through CPT, please consult your school on your ability to work 40 hours per week before applying. You must be able to work 40 hours per week on-site. Many students will be limited to part-time during the academic year.

    As a Mechanical Engineer Intern on Tesla's Service Collision Development team, you will be responsible for specifying and designing Structural Repair Procedures and service parts used to service Tesla electric vehicles world-wide. You will work with internal customers to identify and develop practical solutions to enable fast, seamless, and revolutionary service. The ideal candidate is someone who gets excited solving a variety of problems, competent building things, highly analytical, and sees the big picture needed to evolve a concept into a product. The ideal candidate is a mechanical engineer and possesses a strong understanding of manufacturing concepts.     Location - Austin, TX or Fremont, CA

    • Design service parts and develop repair guidelines/solutions
    • Create service repair procedures and technical documentation
    • Support field escalations and provide engineering solutions to the collision repair network

    Examples of Key Projects:

    • Design and development of cast section parts
    • New model launch support for service parts and repairability
    • Creation of collision service repair manual procedures
    • Repair guidelines for cast, extruded, and stamped components
    • Material testing and weld testing (process development & validation)

    Projected Scope of Work for Mechanical Engineering Intern:

    • Support new service part design, 3D modeling, and detailed drawings (CAD)
    • Assist in collision repair procedure creation and technical writing
    • Support material testing and weld testing (specimen prep, data collection, analysis, and reporting)
    • Contribute to design for repairability, structural analysis, and manufacturing feasibility of service parts
    • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field from ABET accredited program
    • Experience in mechanical design and drafting preferred
    • Experience with 3D CAD and 2D Drawing in SolidWorks or Catia
    • Strong experience Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
    • Hands on experience building mechanical systems preferred
    • Automotive, Aerospace, or heavy equipment industry preferred
    • Machine shop and fabrication experience preferred
    • Strong communication, organization, and documentation skills
    • Proven ability to research information, solve challenging problems, and coordinate projects under tight timing constraints
    • Excellent fundamental engineering knowledge and have examples of applied engineering success through work, projects, or academic endeavors
    • Ability to collaborate in a fast-paced team environment: pro-active team player who thinks ahead, plans, and suggests solutions
