Job SummaryThe City of Columbia Internship Pipeline Program in the City Manager's Office exposes undergraduate and graduate students to career opportunities within city departments. Interns participate in department‑specific projects aligned with their interests, receive workforce development and job‑readiness training, and are assigned a mentor. At the conclusion of the internship, students develop and present a brief capstone presentation to department leadership detailing their experience and project results.EssentialsTemporary position (1,450 hours in the calendar year). No seniority, grievance, or appeal privileges.Eligibility and Major AlignmentGovernment Administration : Public Administration, Political Science, Public Policy – Departments: City Manager's Office, Mayor's Office/City CouncilBusiness & Finance : Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Economics – Departments: Finance, Economic Development, Project Management Office (City Manager's Office)Communications and Media : Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Digital Media, Graphic Design – Departments: Creative Services, Communications and Community Engagement (City Manager's Office)Urban Planning, Public Health & Sustainability : Urban Planning, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Geography, Social Work – Departments: Community Development, Public Works, Utilities/Solid Waste, Sustainability, Public Health, Housing & Neighborhood ServicesMajors: Parks, Recreation, Sport & Tourism, Hospitality Management – Departments: Convention and Visitors Bureau, Parks & RecreationEngineering and Infrastructure : Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Biological Sciences – Departments: Public Works, Utilities/Solid Waste, Water & LightTechnology and Data Analytics : – Departments: Information Technology, Project Management Office (City Manager's Office)ResponsibilitiesReceives and responds to inquiries and requests for assistance from stakeholders; explains City and department policies, procedures, and programs to citizens and partners.Assists with organizing files, preparing, typing, transmitting, copying, and filing documents; managing daily mail, supplies, and equipment.Reviews and assists with developing department literature; maintains records and prepares reports.Assists with planning special events and programs for employees.Provides administrative support to assigned supervisor, including scheduling, meeting coordination, compiling data for reports and studies, and preparing routine and confidential reports and correspondence.Answers telephone calls, provides accurate information, forwards calls, and greets office visitors.Performs routine clerical work, including fax handling, computer data entry, and material assembly.Completes special projects as assigned; attends training, meetings, seminars, etc., to enhance job knowledge and skills.Performs other related duties as assigned.QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED.Some college required; current college transcript or proof of enrollment.Minimum GPA of 3.0.Proficiency in Microsoft Office.Strong communication and problem‑solving skills.Interest in the department's core operation or a closely related field.Work Hours and CompensationAverage 10 hours per week.
