Job Summary

Coordinate, supervise, and participate in the provision of services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Based on the recent Proclamation: Restriction on Entry of Certain Nonimmigrant Workers (H-1B), VSU will not be sponsoring any new H-1B visa petitions until further notice.

Responsibilities

Typical Allocation of Duties: Interpret for students - 40% Interpret for students who are deaf for all academic and co-curricular activities. Meet with students - 30% Meet with students regarding disability-related academic and career issues and accommodation planning. Hire, schedule, and supervise - 20% Hire, schedule, and supervise additional interpreters and note takers. Prepare reports, maintain records, and prepares schedules - 10% Prepare reports and maintain records. Coordinate and manage student/staff schedules to ensure the efficient and effective provision of services to students.

Supervisor Expectations: Demonstrates proficiency in both expressive and receptive communication, including verbal, written, and sign language skills. Provides real time interpretation for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in classroom settings, utilizing American Sign Language, Manually Coded English, Pidgin Signed English, or Oral Interpreting as appropriate. Acts as a liaison between deaf or hard of hearing students and their hearing peers, Faculty, Staff and students. Uses preparation time to review materials, research vocabulary or signs, and communicate with Faculty to ensure effective interpretation during classroom instruction. Maintains confidentiality of students information and adhere to ethical standards of the interpreting profession and the institution. Provides interpreting services for school-related functions outside the classroom as requested (i.e. Commencement, Lighting of the Palms, Mayhem). Review video content and add captions as needed to ensure accessibility compliance. Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor in alignment with Interpreters role and responsibilities.

Required Qualifications

Required Experience Bachelors degree and three (3) years of related work experience. Certification through the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) or the National Interpreter Certification (NIC) performance examination is required by the time of hire.
