Summary:

  • To assist with all aspects of care for patients in Interventional Radiology, including but not limited to: assisting Physicians and Physician's Assistant, performing procedures under direct and indirect supervision of Radiologist, operating and maintaining all imaging equipment, providing direct patient care and educating patients, family members and staff. Ensures all paperwork and imaging are adequately completed and given to the radiologists for interpretation.

Responsibilities:

    1. Patient Care: Provide care to patient and assist physician, communicate proper information, organize workflow, perform IR procedures following established protocols, ensure radiation safety and complete exams in a safe and timely manner. a. Handle patients and family members with courtesy and respect. Provide education and resolve problems. Explain procedures before the start of an exam, provide intra-procedural and post- procedure instructions as needed. b. Organize daily workload and assign priorities for flow of patients. c. Coordinate patient management with other department sections to ensure proper workflow and Completeness of results. Inform patients of delays as they occur. d. Verify patient ID verbally using 3 identifiers: name, date of birth and checking the ID bracelet. e. Review patient allergies, medical history, verify physicians order and signed consent. f. Administer contrast agents following safety and regulatory guidelines. Assess changes in patient condition to aid in avoidance of complications. Follow established protocols for all IR procedures. g. Perform the following procedures with radiologist supervision: 1) Removal of vascular sheaths performed after 3 competencies done under direct supervision of Interventional Radiologist. Subsequent sheath removals done with indirect supervision. Yearly competencies performed reinforce skills. 2) Ultrasound guided PICC line placement, 10 successfully placed PICC's are done under direct supervision of Interventional Radiologist. Subsequent PICC placements done with indirect supervision. Yearly competencies performed reinforce skills. 3) Perform fluoroscopic (static and dynamic) procedures Under the direct or indirect supervision of the Interventional Radiologist. i) Assistance of procedures includes set-up of room and sterile field, sterile preparation of the patient, and assisting the doctor during the procedure with wires, catheters and products. ii) Direct supervision is described as the Interventional Radiologist being present in the room during the procedure. iii) Indirect supervision is described as the Interventional Radiologist being within close proximity and available to take over if needed. h. Follow all radiation protection and safety procedures in accordance with the ACR. i. Ensure exam is completed and patient is discharged in a safe and timely manner. j. Notify patient's nurse verbally and on patient chart of any incident affecting patient care and/or Management as they occur. k. Initiates/assists with first aid and medical treatment during emergency situations. l. Manipulate patient data on computer. Complete filming and processing in timely manner. Deliver completed/coded paperwork and images pertinent to procedure to radiologists and provide patient history 2. Patient Documentation and Departmental Records: Compile and maintain patient records/exam data and charges and department schedule books. a. Maintain patient documentation and records, to include IR computer application, patient logbooks, schedule book, statistical records and exam reports and films. b. Maintain maintenance/service records. c. Utilize hospital computer applications to enter, view and process patient/exam data and charges. d. Maintain and update all records required by licensing/government agencies. 3. Departmental Coordination: Trouble shoot; perform daily maintenance/quality checks; arrange equipment servicing. Order IR Department supplies. Actively participates in and supports department quality initiatives and fiscal goals. a. Able to rotate through all areas of IR suite - filming, scrub and circulating. b. Maintain knowledge of products and their uses to assist Radiologists during procedures. c. Maintain IR equipment and processors; perform trouble shooting, quality control checks and calibrations. d. Arrange for equipment maintenance and repairs. e. Order/maintain all IR Department supplies; use resources in cost effective manner. f. Collect data for QI program as assigned by Radiologists, Administrative Director, or Radiology QI Coordinator. Input IR data in computer system. g. Communicate with department, hospital and transport staff for patient scheduling and transportation needs. 4. Work Behavior and Conduct: Performs all duties in a prompt and professional manor. Demonstrates SERVICE ideals. a. Handle all work contacts with courtesy and respect. b. Attend work, report absences and lateness's, and request time off according to established policies. c. Adopt and practice safe work habits and act within security guidelines at all times. Follow established radiation protection and safety procedures. d. Adhere to established dress code and always present a neat, clean appearance. e. Adhere to hospital's confidentiality policy and Patients' Bill of Rights. f. Carry out assigned job duties and fulfill responsibilities outlined in the job description through own initiative and as directed by Radiologists, Administrative Director, and Interventional Radiology Supervisor. g. Work/flex hours to meet department/patient needs, including on-call, overtime and holidays. h. Cooperate with and assist coworkers and supervisors in completing work; communicate pertinent information. i. Attend department meetings and in-services, case reviews and other meetings as required. j. Demonstrates the highest level of professionalism and ethical standards in the performance of their duties with integrity and to comply with all applicable laws in a manner that excludes considerations of personal advantage or gain. k. Adheres to Doylestown Hospital's Corporate Compliance Plan, and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and Federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Complies with HIPPA Privacy rules by only discussing or seeking out information about the status of patients to whom care is being provided with others providing care for that same patient, and ensuring such discussion takes place in a confidential setting. 5. Professional Growth and Development: Attend educational and training sessions to enhance professional and personal knowledge and awareness. Maintain required certifications/licenses. a. Identify strengths and weaknesses, determine needs for growth/improvement, and seek opportunities for developing job knowledge and skills. b. Continue work-related education and training as indicated by attendance at college courses, workshops, seminars and in-service programs. c. Complete requirements to maintain license and BLS certification.
