Inventory Control Coordinator

Department: Sheet Metal

Location: San Jose, CA. Full-time onsite

Position Summary

The Inventory Control Coordinator is responsible for maintaining accurate inventory levels and overseeing the receipt, storage, tracking, and distribution of sheet metal materials, fittings, HVAC hardware, consumables, and shop supplies. This position supports fabrication operations by ensuring materials are available to meet production schedules while maintaining compliance with company procedures, union work rules, and safety standards.

The Inventory Control Coordinator works closely with the Foremen, Purchasing Department, and Fabrication to ensure efficient material flow and inventory accuracy throughout the shop.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Material Receiving and Processing

  • Receive and verify incoming materials against purchase orders, packing slips, and shipping documents.

  • Inspect deliveries for quantity, quality, and damage.

  • Coordinate resolution of shortages, damaged materials, and vendor discrepancies.

  • Label, identify, and store materials in designated inventory locations.

  • Maintain receiving logs and inventory records.

  • Inventory Management

  • Maintain accurate inventory of sheet metal stock, coils, flat sheets, ductwork components, hardware, weld materials, sealants, and shop consumables.

  • Perform daily inventory monitoring and routine cycle counts.

  • Conduct monthly and annual physical inventories.

  • Investigate and resolve inventory variances.

  • Monitor minimum and maximum stock levels and communicate replenishment needs

  • Production Support

  • Coordinate material issuance to fabrication personnel based on production schedules.

  • Ensure work centers have required materials available to meet production demands.

  • Track remnant material inventory and scrap recovery opportunities.

  • Assist in minimizing material waste and improving shop efficiency

  • Warehouse and Shop Organization

  • Maintain organized storage areas, racks, and inventory locations.

  • Ensure proper handling and storage of materials to prevent damage.

  • Monitor housekeeping standards within inventory and warehouse areas.

  • Support lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Coordination and Communication

  • Work closely with Purchasing to maintain appropriate inventory levels.

  • Coordinate with Foreman regarding project material requirements.

  • Communicating material shortages and lead-time concerns to shop leadership.

  • Support fabrication scheduling by ensuring material availability.

  • Safety and Compliance

  • Follow all company safety policies and union work rules.

  • Maintain OSHA-compliant storage and material handling practices.

  • Operate forklifts and material handling equipment safely.

  • Participate in safety meetings and training programs.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in inventory control, warehouse operations, or material management.
  • Experience in sheet metal fabrication, HVAC, construction, or manufacturing environments.
  • Ability to read bills of materials, fabrication drawings, and purchase orders.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office and inventory management systems.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to operate forklifts and material handling equipment safely.

Preferred

  • Experience in a union sheet metal fabrication environment.
  • Knowledge of HVAC ductwork fabrication processes and materials.
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems and inventory software.
  • Forklift certification.
  • Understanding of SMART Union shop operations and work practices.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and climbing.
  • Ability to work in a shop and warehouse environment with varying temperatures.
  • Ability to safely operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and material handling equipment.

Performance Expectations

  • Maintain inventory accuracy of 98% or greater.
  • Minimize fabrication downtime due to material shortages.
  • Ensure timely receiving and distribution of materials.
  • Maintain organized and safe storage areas.
  • Support on-time project completion through effective inventory management.

Hourly Compensation: $35-$40.
