Contract IoT Engineer –AWS IoT Platform Stabilization & Terraform Migration

Engagement Type: Fixed-scope contract Duration: 1-2 months Location: Fully Remote (U.S. Time zones) Start: ASAP
Role Overview
We are looking for a senior IoT Engineer to stabilize and harden a production AWS IoT platform. This is not greenfield development. The focus is on issue resolution, Infrastructure-as-Code migration, standardized edge device provisioning, and complete internal handoff.
Key Objectives
  • Stabilize production issues (especially SNS notification reliability)
  • Migrate entire platform to Terraform (IaC)
  • Create repeatable, documented provisioning workflow for InHand industrial edge routers
  • Deliver high-quality documentation and knowledge transfer for internal ownership
Technology Stack
  • AWS Services: IoT Core, IoT SiteWise, Lambda (Python/Node.Js), SNS, CloudWatch, IAM, S3, Managed Grafana
  • IaC: Terraform
  • Edge Hardware: InHandGo EC942 (or similar industrial routers)
  • Tools: GitHub Enterprise
Responsibilities
  • Triage and resolve open production issues, prioritizing notification/alerting reliability
  • Inventory, import, and migrate all AWS resources into clean Terraform modules with remote state
  • Design and document a standardized “cookie-cutter”provisioning process for new edge routers (out-of-box →fully integrated)
  • Produce comprehensive documentation: architecture diagrams, runbooks, provisioning guides, and operational procedures
  • Conduct knowledge transfer sessions with internal team
Required Skills & Experience
  • 5+ years AWS cloud engineering with production support
  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS IoT Core and AWS IoT SiteWise
  • Advanced Terraform skills (module design, resource import, state management, best practices)
  • Experience provisioning industrial edge routers / cellular gateways with certificate-based onboarding
  • Proficiency in AWS Lambda, SNS, IAM, CloudWatch, and Grafana
  • Strong documentation and knowledge transfer skills
  • Experience stabilizing and handing off inherited platforms
Preferred Skills
  • Industrial / manufacturing IoT experience
  • Cellular fleet management
  • Terraform automation (pipelines, custom UIs, or modules)
Deliverables
  • Fully stabilized platform with resolved notification issues
  • Complete Terraform IaC codebase in GitHub Enterprise
  • Repeatable, documented edge router provisioning workflow
  • High-quality architecture docs, runbooks, and operational guides
  • Successful internal team handoff
