This is very responsible technical office and public contact work in the City's Building Department, performing work that is moderate to difficult in nature, involving the review and processing of plans and permits for compliance with Florida building codes, municipal ordinances, life safety codes, flood prevention ordinances and other regulatory codes governing the construction, alteration, maintenance, and repair of commercial and residential structures. Work includes the study of new materials, methods, and applications of building construction to keep abreast of modern developments; conducting field inspections; recommending changes to bring plans into conformance with codes; and issuing permits for building construction and alteration, parking lot location and construction and outdoor sign erection. Work may include serving as lead supervisor over staff engaged in similar activities and providing advice and assistance in the more difficult work matters. Work requires considerable initiative and the exercise of independent judgment, discretion, and tact in dealing with personnel of other City departments, County, State and Federal officials, the public, contractors, and design professionals.
