Position Summary/Objective 

The Iron Worker is responsible for laying out and fabricating structural steel and sheet metal in order to build metal structures. Welds and cuts steel. Interprets blueprints. This role demands physical strength, precision, and an understanding of safety procedures to ensure the integrity and durability of these critical infrastructures. 

 

Principal/Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Erect structural steel frames, bar joist, decking of structures & stairs/handrail. Will erect structural and bolt up. 

  • Build and install iron or steel girders, columns, and other construction materials to form docks or trestles and other structures 

  • Make, weld, and cut structural metal on jobsites 

  • Direct operation of cranes to move structural steel and other materials onto and around the construction site 

  • Connect steel columns, beams, and girders 

  • Drill holes into steel for bolts 

  • Unload and stack steel 

  • Attach cables to steel and then to the crane 

  • Hoist steel into place in the framework 

  • Position steel with connecting bars and spud wrenches 

  • Work with drift pins and 4-lb hammers to align the holes in the steel with the framework holes 

  • Use plumb bobs, levels, and laser equipment to check alignment 

  • Bolt or weld piece into place 

  • Operate forklifts, scissor lifts and boom lifts to erect steel columns, beams, and girders according to blueprints 

  • Unload and stack prefabricated steel and assist with rigging 

  • Verify vertical and horizontal alignment of steel structures 

  • Using torches and welding equipment to cut, bend and weld steel 

  • Attend toolbox talks and maintain a safe atmosphere 

  • Keep the site clean and organized. Control quality and tools needed for own work.

Qualifications  

Required 

Preferred 

  • Must be certified by American Welding Society (AWS) or similar group 

  • Previous experience with and understanding of the pile driving process and heavy equipment 

  • Ability to read and understand a heavy construction plan 

  • Ability to operate equipment 

  • Must be 18 years in age or older 

  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen 

  • A Valid Driver’s License 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred 

  • Ability to work overtime and flexible hours (day/night/weekends) 

  • Ability to work outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions 

  • Knowledge and working experience of DOT standards and regulations 

  • Ability to communicate with others to convey information effectively 

  • Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms, legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials 

  • Demonstrate attention to details 

  • Knowledgeable of safety procedures and practices 

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. 

  • 1-2 years of experience working on heavy civil construction projects preferred

  • Proficiency in welding, cutting, and shaping steel. 

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings. 

  • Strong understanding of safety protocols and best practices in construction. 

  • Physical strength and stamina to perform demanding tasks. 

  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.

  • Exposure to extreme temperatures as well as high levels of noise and varying levels of dust 

  • Working on uneven and potentially hazardous terrain, including working at heights, underground, or near water bodies depending on the bridge/ tunnel location 

  • Managing activities in a busy construction zone with heavy machinery, equipment, and ongoing operations. 

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, and reflective vests when on-site.

  • Must be able to lift 50lbs
