Structural Steel Worker / Ironworker - Job Description Job Summary: Responsible for assembling, erecting, and installing structural steel and precast components on industrial and commercial construction projects. This position involves heavy physical labor, precision alignment work, and strict adherence to safety standards while working in outdoor and high-risk environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Assemble hoisting equipment and rigging, including cables, pulleys, and hooks, to move heavy materials and equipment Hoist, position, and secure structural steel beams, columns, and girders using cranes or by signaling crane operators Bolt structural steel members into position for permanent bolting, riveting, or welding according to blueprints and supervisor instructions Connect and align structural steel components using bolts, drift pins, and alignment tools Erect structural steel and precast concrete components for buildings, bridges, towers, dams, storage tanks, fences, and guardrails Fasten steel members to hoist cables using chains, ropes, or rigging systems Position and adjust steel components using turnbuckles, crowbars, jacks, and hand tools Pull, push, or pry structural steel into position (up to 50 lbs) Guide materials into position using rope and rigging lines Unload and position prefabricated steel units for installation and hoisting Verify alignment using plumb bobs, laser equipment, and levels Cut, bend, weld, and fabricate steel components using torches, shears, and welding equipment Dismantle structures and equipment as required Fabricate steel parts such as frames, beams, girders, and columns per blueprints or supervisor direction Maintain positive working relationships with crew members and other trades Perform other duties as assigned
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 lbs. Ability to work up to 10-hour shifts performing physically demanding labor Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and reaching Ability to work in confined, uneven, elevated, and outdoor environments
Work Environment:
Exposure to loud noise, dust, heavy equipment, and active construction operations Outdoor work in varying weather and temperature conditions Work performed near cranes, rigging operations, and elevated structures
Safety Requirements:
Must comply with all safety standards and procedures at all times Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including steel-toed boots, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, safety vest, and face mask as needed
Qualifications:
Minimum of 4 years of structural steel or ironworking experience preferred Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings Experience with rigging, hoisting, and structural steel erection Strong teamwork and communication skills Ability to work safely in high-risk construction environments Must have OSHA - 10
