In-School Suspension Assistant/Bus Driver

Nature of Work

Under the general supervision of the principal or designee, the In-School Suspension Assistant provides instructional, behavioral, and supervisory support for students assigned to In-School Suspension. The employee also operates a school bus or activity bus as assigned and supports the safe transportation of students.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinates, provides, and supervises instructional and behavioral activities for students assigned to In-School Suspension.
  • Obtains assignments and instructional materials from classroom teachers and monitors students' completion of required work.
  • Provides academic assistance and tutorial support as needed.
  • Helps students reflect on inappropriate behavior and develop strategies to make better choices and prevent future incidents.
  • Reinforces positive behavior, personal responsibility, conflict-resolution skills, and school expectations.
  • Works collaboratively with administrators, teachers, counselors, and other school personnel to address students' academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs.
  • Assigns and supervises additional activities related to student infractions when directed by an administrator.
  • Communicates with parents or guardians regarding student conduct, progress, and behavior-support plans as directed.
  • Communicates proactively with teachers and administrators regarding student concerns, completed assignments, and relevant parent communication.
  • Responds to emails, telephone calls, and requests from school leaders and teachers in a timely and professional manner.
  • Maintains accurate records of student attendance, assignments, behavior, and other required documentation.
  • Assists with standardized testing and follows all state, district, and school testing procedures.
  • Monitors student movement throughout the building, including transitions to classrooms, learning areas, and the cafeteria.
  • Supervises students during meals, transitions, arrival, dismissal, and other assigned activities.
  • Assists with the distribution and organization of instructional materials, supplies, food, equipment, and technology.
  • Supports classroom and cafeteria cleanup and helps maintain a safe and orderly school environment.
  • Assists administrators and staff with the orderly, efficient, and safe movement of students from one location to another.
  • Participates in required professional development, training, and staff meetings.
  • Maintains prompt and regular attendance and is available to work on-site during assigned hours.
  • Maintains student confidentiality and complies with all district policies, procedures, and professional standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the principal, transportation department, or appropriate administrator.

School Bus Driving Responsibilities

  • Operates a school bus or activity bus on an assigned route or as otherwise directed by the district.
  • Safely transports students to and from school, activities, and other approved locations.
  • Conducts required pre-trip and post-trip inspections and reports safety, maintenance, or mechanical concerns promptly.
  • Maintains order and appropriate student behavior while students are being transported.
  • Follows all federal, state, NCDMV, NCDPI, and Rutherford County Schools transportation requirements.
  • Maintains required driving credentials, endorsements, medical certification, training, and school-bus certification.
  • Participates in required transportation training, drug and alcohol testing, and safety meetings.
  • Reports accidents, incidents, student concerns, traffic violations, or changes in driving status immediately.
  • Completes required route, mileage, inspection, and transportation documentation accurately and on time.
  • May be required to drive morning and afternoon routes, activity trips, field trips, or other assignments based on district needs.

Minimum Training and Experience

  • Associate degree or a minimum of 48 semester hours of college credit from an accredited institution required.

  • Experience working with school-age students preferred.

  • Experience supporting students with academic or behavioral needs preferred.

  • Must meet all Rutherford County Schools employment and background-check requirements.

  • Must possess or be willing and able to obtain and maintain:

  • A valid commercial driver license appropriate for the vehicle operated;

  • Passenger and school-bus endorsements;

  • North Carolina school-bus driver certification;

  • Required medical certification;

  • Satisfactory completion of required school-bus training and testing; and

  • Compliance with applicable drug and alcohol testing requirements.

  • Must maintain an acceptable driving record and remain eligible to operate a school bus under state and district requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to supervise students and maintain a safe, orderly learning environment.
  • Ability to support students with assignments and provide basic instructional assistance.
  • Ability to establish appropriate boundaries and respond consistently to student behavior.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and transportation personnel.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and follow written procedures.
  • Ability to respond calmly and appropriately during emergencies or stressful situations.
  • Ability to operate a school bus safely and comply with transportation laws, regulations, and procedures.
  • Ability to perform required vehicle inspections and identify potential safety concerns.
  • Ability to work independently while following the direction of school and district administrators.

Essential Job Functions

  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to read and follow instructional materials, student plans, correspondence, transportation procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Must be able to operate computers, copiers, instructional technology, communication devices, and other school equipment.
  • Must be able to move throughout the school building and supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, buses, and other settings.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods while supervising students or operating a school bus.
  • Must have sufficient vision, hearing, mobility, coordination, and reaction time to safely operate a school bus and supervise students.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, or move instructional materials, supplies, and equipment as needed.
  • Must be able to respond appropriately to emergency situations and assist with student evacuation when necessary.
  • Must be able to perform duties in varying weather, traffic, and road conditions.
  • Must be able to work the schedule required for both school-based duties and assigned transportation responsibilities.
