SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Reporting to the Associate VP, Systems & Networking, the IT Assistant provides IT and other technical support to students, faculty and staff at both campus locations. In the absence of the AVP, the IT Assistant takes direction from the Senior IT Specialist in Vancouver. The day-to-day tasks for this position include password resets and assisting and maintaining the logical and physical upkeep of computer labs, general desktops and faculty/staff laptops. The IT Assistant is the primary point person for all Microsoft Office applications, Windows desktop operating systems, basic troubleshooting, and printer and copier maintenance. The IT Assistant is also expected to become knowledgeable with the Cisco network infrastructure on Campus to assist with troubleshooting and resolution along with the NJ Network team.

Principal Duties:

  • Provides Tier II level support for infrastructure operations at the Vancouver campus. On-site support to troubleshoot and fix copiers, printers, the Unified Communication system, desktops, laptops, operating systems, applications, AV, high-definition IP video conferencing, security cameras, and all other technology on campus.
  • Performs image deployment on computer labs, staff and faculty laptops in conjunction with Computing Services.
  • Installs and tests necessary software and hardware in conjunction with Computing Services.
  • Assists with the onboarding process of newly hired staff, faculty and adjuncts to ensure successful access to all systems and telephony that are entitled to the position.
  • Provides end users with tier II level desktop and network technical support.
  • Support all classroom technology and staff conference room technology. Proficient in AV systems and ITV. Able to provide proactive and reactive support to all functions that take place within those two environments.
  • Responds to and resolves end user issues that are reported through the FDU ticketing system.
  • Monitors and supports all activities that take place in the computer labs. Ensure all computers in labs are functioning as specified by Computing Services.
  • Performs network troubleshooting to isolate and diagnose common network problems as needed or requested by NJ Networking team.
  • Responds to needs and questions of faculty, staff and students concerning all network and data related issues.
  • Trains and oversees Student IT assistants along with other IT staff. Works with students to build their knowledge base as Tier I support for any issues.
  • Back up for ID card creation and printing for students, faculty and staff if needed.
  • Is assigned projects independent of daily functions to complete. Projects can be short term or long term, and individuals are expected to plan, report and execute the details of the project through the SAMI Project Management tool.
  • Provides training on applications and systems for students, faculty and staff. Expected to be proficient in key software such as MS Suite, MS Teams, Webex, DUO MFA, Outlook, ISP and more. The IT assistant, along with other members of the Vancouver IT staff, needs to be up to date in all new software & process launches and Tech Alerts and work hands-on with the end user community to ensure their level of awareness and understanding.
  • Provides evening/weekend coverage as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the VP, Systems & Networking or Senior IT specialist

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree; equivalent related experience and/or technical/certification training will be considered in lieu of degree.
  • A minimum of two years' experience in supporting IT.
  • Good knowledge of Cisco IOS.
  • Excellent knowledge of desktop operating systems and applications (Windows and Office).
  • Ability to work on PCs and desktops to remove/replace components with the assistance of the manufacturer.
  • TCP/IP networking experience mandatory.
  • High level of hardware and software troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience with MS Active Directory clients is an asset.
  • Linux command line experience is desirable.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new technology as required.
  • The ability to handle tight deadlines and multiple high priority projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively in a fast-paced environment, with excellent English writing and speaking skills.
  • Positive customer-service attitude.
  • An interest in working in a distributed environment dedicated to global learning; multicultural experience preferred.
  • Flexibility in schedule and accessibility outside of regular work hours to address questions or concerns, including the ability to be on-call for emergencies.
  • Willing to start later in the day and end in the evening. Willing to work occasional weekends as necessary.
  • Canadian Residency or work permit required.
  • Employment is contingent upon a satisfactory background check. Candidates for hire will be required to sign a waiver authorizing the background check.
