Role Overview:

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development is seeking a forward‑thinking IT Director to lead the agency's long‑range technology vision and drive innovation that strengthens workforce initiatives statewide. In this role, you will guide technology strategy, shape policy, and oversee critical IT systems that support DWD's mission to empower Hoosiers and employers. Your work will span high‑level planning, organizational leadership, and hands‑on decision‑making-often tackling new and unprecedented challenges requiring creativity and strategic insight.

As a key partner to agency leadership, you will align modern technology solutions with business needs, supervise and develop IT teams, manage major projects, and represent the IT division in agency-wide and cross‑government collaborations. Salary:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $107,302.00 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. Use our Compensation Calculator to view the total compensation package.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Establish current and long-range technology goals in accordance with the agency mission.
  • Lead discussions in the development of agency policy and planning for the future.
  • Set policies and procedures, review methods, processes, and specifications of the IT systems to develop strategies.
  • Act as a liaison between information systems and other functions of the agency.
  • Directly supervise or provide functional direction to Deputy Information Technology Director(s), function manager(s), supervisor(s) and other information technology staff.
  • Dispense technical advice, guidance, direction, and authorization to carry out major plans and procedures.
  • Analyze high-level business needs and research new technologies to identify and select IT hardware and software products to support internal business processes.
  • Represent the agency's information technology division at events and meetings that are within and outside of state government.
  • Participate in the budgeting process with agency executives for the information technology division.
  • Oversee IT projects through their entire lifecycle to ensure timely completion and within budget.
  • Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.
  • Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

What Youll Need for Success:

Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:

  • Thorough knowledge of the organization and management of the state agency's operations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the organization and management of state government.
  • Ability to negotiate complex and large sum agreements with other agencies, divisions, and outside vendors.
  • Ability to frame issues based on the policy implications associated with managing what is otherwise a very technical discipline.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.
  • Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.

A degree is not required. However, at least 7+ years of experience in Information Technology or a related field with experience applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered.

This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
