What You Will Do
This posting is for an IT Project Manager 3 in the Information Technology Project Management (ITPM) Group in the Project Strategy and Execution Division (PSE-ITPM), which is part of the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Business Management (ALDBUS). The PSE-ITPM group provides IT project and program management support to ensure IT projects achieve success and deliver expected outcomes within scope, schedule, and budget.

IT Project Manager 3 Responsibilities ($117,200 - $195,400)
The project manager manages and ensures the timely completion of multi-discipline IT projects of various levels of complexity and scope, provides leadership throughout the entire project lifecycle using various project management methodologies and tools to achieve project objectives and outcomes, and oversees the project team in the planning, tracking, and execution of the project from initiation to completion and facilitates transfer of operations and maintenance activities.

The project manager will play a pivotal role in driving the development and deployment of innovative AI solutions. You will collaborate closely with customers driving AI initiatives across the Lab and engaging cross-functional teams, including engineers, scientists, and business stakeholders to deliver high-impact AI strategy, pilots, and production implementations. Expectation is that work is accomplished without considerable direction and includes coordinating activities of other personnel and is granted significant latitude in determining objectives of assignment, and determines the methods and procedures needed for new assignments.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Experience supporting, contributing to, or collaborating on technology initiatives involving AI, data analytics, automation, or emerging technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with technical teams developing AI enabled solutions and to communicate technical concepts, risks, requirements, and project impacts to both technical and non technical stakeholders.
  • Strong knowledge of software development methodologies, tools, and processes, including source code control, application development tools and techniques, database design and management, programming languages, and component integration.
  • Advanced understanding of IT environments and application development methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with customers, solve problems, and define expectations and mutual responsibilities.
  • Proven ability to review and understand end to end work processes.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, problem solving, conflict resolution, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce professional project charters, PMPs, and other technical and project documentation.
  • Detailed knowledge of Agile and Scrum methodologies.

Education/Experience: Requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a government or national laboratory environment.
  • Experience managing AI initiatives, including LLM, machine learning, predictive analytics, or automation projects.
  • Familiarity with AI governance, responsible AI practices, model lifecycle management, and AI-related risk management.
  • Working knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, large language models (LLMs), data analytics, and automation technologies, including their application to business, operational, and mission focused objectives.
  • Experience of being on various development teams in a variety of different contexts (different team sizes, different organizations, different cultures, co-located vs. distributed, etc.)
  • The Project Management Professional (PMP) credential.
  • Scrum Master Certification (CSM), SAFe, or equivalent.
  • Experience working in a hybrid methodology across different teams (Agile and waterfall combined)

Work Location: The work location for this position is telework and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Telework is defined as working from offsite but within 2hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite may be periodically necessary. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
