Job Description

Job Title:  IT System Administrator                          Department:  IT                        

Reports To:  Director of Information Technology       FLSA Status:  Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY: The IT System Administrator’s primary function is to ensure secure, effective, and efficient use of computer systems and other technologies, including company workstations, servers, and networking equipment.  This position works closely with the Director of Information Technology in the development of short and long-range plans for implementation of various types of computer equipment and systems.

KEY or ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

The essential functions/responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Troubleshoot problems as reported by users and manage helpdesk support related to local area networks and network servers.  Follow up on solutions to ensure they are working as designed.
  • Maintain, configure, and install network-based software.  Perform system administration, including user account maintenance, application maintenance and ongoing maintenance of peripherals.
  • Analyze computer and information systems and recommend design changes, program implementation and appropriate purchases and/or upgrades as necessary.
  • Maintain computer and network security.
  • Coordinate and perform regular maintenance of server systems through backups and vulnerability patching.
  • Submit requests and provide recommendations for tools and equipment needed to support AELP IT systems.  Maintain records of IT property.
  • Ensure security, safety, and neatness of computer rooms at Lemon Creek and Thane substation.
  • In conjunction with the Directory of Information Technology, design, engineer, implement, document and maintain custom electronic systems for AELP, including data networks, servers, and application servers.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

The IT System Administrator requires demonstrable knowledge of:

  • Troubleshooting techniques for peripherals, networks, and associated computers.
  • PC hardware configuration and network technology.
  • System commands for modern PC and network operating systems.
  • Communication systems and training techniques.

The IT System Administrator requires the skills to:

Use diagnostic software for PCs and networks.

  • Explain and interpret networking goals and needs in an easily understood manner to IT personnel through verbal presentations and written reports.

The IT System Administrator requires the ability to:

  • Apply principles and techniques of project management in planning, coordinating, and executing.
  • Problem-solve and analyze a variety of variables.
  • Effectively communicate required actions to team members and network users, both verbally and in writing.

 

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:   

A bachelor’s degree in computer science, or engineering, or a minimum of 5 years of professional IT experience. Professional certifications in Microsoft’s Certified Professional program preferred. 

EQUIPMENT UTILIZED:   

Personal computers, laptops, mobile phones, network tone testing equipment. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:   

The work environment is generally sedentary. Periodically, the employee will need to be able to lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally work in a noisy environment. The ability to get in and out of small fixed-wing aircraft or helicopters at remote sites is needed. The ability to climb ladders in and out of boats may be required.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:   

  • Possess good interpersonal and customer service skills to communicate with and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, outside vendors, contractors, and the public.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment, with constant interruptions and distractions. The ability to multitask, adapt to changing priorities, and meet set deadlines is required.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational, analytical skills are required. Must be able to work efficiently without supervision to meet deadlines and balance multiple tasks.
  • Be able to work well and complete duties accurately while under pressure, while attending to multiple duties simultaneously.
  • Have demonstrated the ability to be punctual and reliable in attendance.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with all levels of the organization, outside agencies, governmental bodies, and the public.
  • Have the demonstrated ability to weigh competing factors and make decisions in a technical environment, sometimes with a lack of adequate data.
