Duties & Responsibilities:

The VCU College of Engineering is seeking a skilled, collaborative, and customer focused IT Systems Analyst to support the technology needs of our vibrant academic community. This position plays a key role in maintaining and enhancing the technology infrastructure that supports teaching, research, and administrative operations across the college. Working closely with students, faculty, and staff, the successful candidate will provide technical support, implement and maintain IT systems, troubleshoot complex issues, and contribute to technology initiatives that improve the college's learning and working environment. From endpoint management and systems administration to infrastructure planning and strategic technology initiatives, your work will directly contribute to the success of a dynamic and growing engineering community.

Specific duties include:

  • Facilitate the installation, deployment and configuration of Linux endpoints and build repositories of appropriate software libraries and tools.
  • Administer Linux servers using tools that increase the manageability, stability, flexibility, and resiliency of the Linux environment.
  • Trouble-shoot hardware and software problems on Linux systems, and replace disk drives, RAM, and internal adapter boards.
  • Provide technical consulting to the students, faculty and staff to provide IT solutions.
  • Service incoming tickets from the RamsCentral ticketing system for Linux related requests, help with email and phone-in requests.
  • Initiate and respond to requests for special projects outside of daily goals by identifying and performing necessary tasks by case specific deadlines in order to support departmental responsiveness to change and market demand.
  • Develop documentation for systems and services provided to users.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have relevant working experience with Linux systems to include deployment and management of environments on physical hardware and virtual machines.
  • Knowledge of Intel, AMD and NVIDIA hardware is required.
  • Ability to utilize scripting languages such as Linux shell and Python to automate tasks.
  • Must have good hardware installation and troubleshooting skills.
  • Good organizational and communication skills; ability to translate technical specifications in a manner that end users understand, and to manage changing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, using sound judgment in a dynamic academic setting.
  • Must have very strong customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College degree in computer science, information systems, computer engineering, engineering or related field, or training and equivalent work experience at a level that equates to a bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • Experience with Ubuntu/Arch Linux.
  • Experience with Puppet software configuration management.
  • Experience with Lmod.
  • Experience with Xen Cloud Platform (XCP-ng).
  • Some knowledge of Windows and Mac operating systems experience preferred.

Salary Range: $70,000 - $85,000
