**Jig Bore Machinist

**

  • Setting up and operating a Pratt & Whitney 2E Jig Bore machine – this is a manual vertical jib borer. It is outfitted with a DRO, a rotary table, and was likely manufactured in the 50s or 60s.

  • Parts: a variety of parts are thrown onto these machines and can be as large as 24” square. Currently, the majority of parts are 1’ long and 5” in width/diameter.- The parts are GEnx FMU housings. They are made of aluminum billet.

    • The holes being bored range from 1-3” in diameter and 6-8” deep with many of them being very “superficial”.
    • On average, parts have 1-2 features that need to be reworked of approximately 100 total features/dimensions. But each feature needing rework is different for each FMU so the work is not repetitive, and it will require a setup for every part.
    • Approximately 10-12 parts can be reworked in one day.
  • Setup: working from print only, there are no set up sheets or instructions. This will require an attention to detail and critical thinking to ensure that parts are fixtured accurately and set up on the rotary table accurately to perform precision boring rework ops.- There will be instruction detailing the features that need rework as well but not how to do it.

  • Prints are standard/inch, GD&T is utilized and it is CRITICAL that someone understand GD&T features.

  • Quality: working from dimensional control plans that indicate the hole size and that’s what is being checked but all parts are sent to the QC area for CMM checks as well.- Tolerances: .001”.

    • Tools used: plug gauges, bore mics, ID bore tools, surface plates, and visual inspections.
  • This operation occurs in the rework area, so all parts have issues from past manufacturing operations that require rework to bring into tolerance and spec.

  • Must have experience setting up and operating manual vertical Jig Bore machines.

You should be proficient in:

  • GD&T
  • Advanced Inspection & Gauge Measurement
  • Machine Geometry & Alignment
  • Machine Setups for Production Runs
  • Blueprint Reading

Machines & technologies you'll use:

  • Boring Mill
  • Jig Grinder
