Job Summary

The Journey Plumber reports to the Plumber Supervisor. The position responsibilities include installing, repairing, replacing, insulating, and maintaining all plumbing fixtures, heating systems, air compressor systems, drainage, waste and vent systems, culinary water systems, fire protection sprinkling systems, backflow preventers, and chemical feed piping systems, site utilities. Recognize dangerous water connections and correct to protect against the contamination of culinary water systems on all College properties. Perform and complete assigned work orders in a timely and professional manner. Work and coordinate with other trades, staff, and faculty as job duties require.

This position has a regular schedule but requires flexibility and must be available to work on call for other building clean up emergencies, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

  • Perform preventive maintenance on fixtures such as auguring clogged drain lines, repairing leaking faucets, and replacing worn or bad fixtures etc.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain electronic circuit boards on infrared censored fixtures.
  • Read meters and report water usage.
  • Install and maintain pipes and fittings including assembly, cutting, threading, welding, and victaulic grooving to accomplish goals.
  • Perform plumbing, heating, and pipe fitting repair. Replacement includes high pressure steam systems, hot water heating systems, drainage systems, acid waste systems, etc.
  • Maintain culinary water systems and test and repair backflow prevention devices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Perform plumbing practices such as steam heating, hot water heating, basic plumbing, backflow prevention, etc.
  • Work with tools relevant to position such as a pipe threading machine, power tools, augers, hand tools, etc.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, plumbing related specifications, and code books.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate and work well with co-workers and customers.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work in areas subject to high locations, awkward positions, heat/cold weather, noise, dirt, chemicals, and confined spaces.
  • Ability to occasionally lift heavy equipment, supplies, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

Minimum qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) to five (5) years' experience in the plumbing field
  • Complete apprenticeship program and successfully pass Utah State Journeymans Exam
  • Possess active Utah Journeyman Plumbing License
  • Possess and maintain a class II backflow certification
  • Must have a valid Utah driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

Plumbing maintenance experience working in a higher education environment.
