OVERVIEW:
  • The position of Journeyman Carpenter is primarily accountable for scheduling, budgeting and completing construction related work assigned to them by their respective Project Manager for insurance related damage or building maintenance projects for commercial properties. The Journeyman Carpenter is responsible for assisting in the completion of building maintenance & construction-related projects, in a professional and timely manner. They will traditionally be working on an allotment of projects as they are capable of handling, as assigned by the Superintendent or PM
 
SUPERVISION AND EXERCISE RECEIVED:
  • Receives general direction and supervision from the Superintendent or PM
 
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Produce quality repairs by following company standards and procedures; measuring results against standards; making necessary adjustments
  • Determines material requirements and dimensions of structure by studying blueprints, sketches, building plans, estimates and/or work orders
  • Prepares reconstruction plans by following company procedures for returning a structure back to its original state before the damaged occurred
  • Constructs and/or repairs by marking cutting and assembly of materials; shaping materials to measurements; assembling and fastening; using carpenter's hand tools, power tools, and woodworking machinery
  • Complies with federal, state, and local building codes by adhering to requirements; advising management on needed actions
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with the company's procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Maintains continuity among work teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing improvement needs
  • Constructs, repairs, restores and installs structures such as floors, doors, walls, windows, stairways, furniture, cabinets, shelves and roofs
  • Projects and work with structural framing of building in both wood and metal, repairs and maintenance, demolition of horizontal and vertical structures
  • Daily contact with customers to check on quality, communications and job cleanliness of crew
  • Manage worksites on a daily basis to check quality of work, check on the subcontractor and meet with the client
  • Achieve superior performance from the entire staff and raising performance levels of anyone that is underachieving within your area of responsibility
  • Manage calls to the adjuster, agent property manager, tenant or other concerned party and proper documentation of each call in the PSR system, as needed
  • Coach and develop project teams to cross train, bring in tools and resources from outside sources
  • Dedicate yourself to constant and never-ending improvement
  • Participating in developing competent people who understand and meet our objectives, and who accept with open minds the ideas, suggestions and constructive criticisms of fellow employees

Ability to:
  • Apply skills in the construction, repair, restoration and installation of wood or related materials
  • Estimate time and materials needed for assigned work projects
  • Accurately measure
  • Perform handy-man and building maintenance task
  • Read blueprints and/or building sketches to prepare project layout
  • Use all hand tools, equipment and materials common to the trade
  • Set a production schedule
  • Manage a production budget with the Superintendent
  • Handle crisis management as situations occur
  • Assist in problem solving and in making this a more effective organization
  • Work on call and in all emergency situations as needed
  • Apply general mathematical and data entry skills
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills including read and write the English language
  • Generate information within a reasonable time frame with accuracy and efficiency
  • Manage details of multiple projects in an efficient and organized method
  • Manage professional and timely contact with clients, employees and vendors
  • Produce work in a timely, budgeted, scheduled and profitable manner for the Company
  • Apply safety procedures and principles on a daily basis and protect yourself and others from injury
Knowledge of:
  • Drywall repairs, texturing, hanging, painting, finish and rough carpentry, windows and door installation and other installation items as needed
  • Commercial building maintenance
  • Industry and management and seek outside knowledge as needed
  • Managing a job/project budget
  • Ordering materials with the Superintendent for a project
  • Industry software and platforms: Xactimate, Contractor Connection, PSA, Code Blue and other similar programs
  • Laws, rules and regulations that govern the areas of your job, the restoration industry including but not limited to your scope of work
  • Industry knowledge and the ability to seek knowledge if new to the industry
  • The Company ethics, image and goals and how they shall be reflected in the day-to-day job duties of you and your staff
  • All policies and procedures of the Company, ability to apply and understand
  • OSHA safety regulations of the industry and provide an active role in monitoring the safety of yourself and other team members
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • GED or High School Diploma and four years of experience relating to construction, maintenance, or repair, or any equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of wood and metal structural carpentry, tools, materials and related work procedures
  • Knowledge of Uniform and Building Codes and Standards
  • Attention to Detail, Planning, Power Tools, Conceptual Skills, Supply Management, Basic Safety, Equipment Maintenance, Judgment, Customer Service
 
LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid State driver’s license
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Must possess mobility to work in an outdoor setting and drive and operate motor vehicles, mechanical equipment and machinery. This would require finger dexterity to access switches, tools, industry equipment and safety equipment. Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone. Employees will be working around cleaning supplies, deodorization, and other products with chemical base. Required to climb ladders and work in high places. Ability to stand, walk, squat, climb, crouch, crawl, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, pull equipment and retrieve items and exert a moderate amount of physical effort to perform such duties. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 75 lbs. and occasionally 100 lbs., to perform the functions of the job. Must be capable to work fire, smoke and/or water damage environments that have potential for mold or mildew
 
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Working outdoors in vary temperature conditions and some direct exposure to hazardous substances. Workers may be subject to uncomfortable working conditions including exposure to extreme heat or cold, dust, noise, unusual heights, confined spaces, electrical currents and construction hazards. Due to the nature of the work, often the job sites will be dirty, possibly cold or wet and sometimes unsanitary. Employees will be required to wear protective gear as necessary and most working hours. The work is sometimes strenuous. Employees must be able to follow safety precautions because working in damaged building leaves them vulnerable, particularly following earthquakes, for example. Disaster areas often lack resources and comfortable areas to rest. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or customers
