Reports To: Shop Supervisor / Foreman

Position Summary

The Journeyman Metal Fabricator independently reads blueprints, fabricates, assembles, and finishes sheet metal components with precision and efficiency. This role requires advanced fabrication knowledge, operation of shop equipment, welding proficiency, and strict adherence to safety and quality standards. Work includes custom metal fabrication, structural components, duct systems, enclosures, and specialty assemblies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Set up and operate fabrication equipment including press brakes, shears, saws, rolls, punches, plasma/laser cutters, and welding equipment.
  • Perform MIG, TIG, stick, and/or laser welding on mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum as required.
  • Lay out, cut, bend, form, assemble, and finish sheet metal components to specified dimensions and tolerances.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with quality standards and customer requirements.
  • Collaborate with apprentices, co-workers, and supervisors to meet production schedules and project deadlines.
  • Follow all shop safety procedures, including proper PPE use and safe equipment operation.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and a clean, organized work area.
  • Support continuous improvement of shop processes and workflow.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on sheet metal fabrication experience in a diverse shop environment.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret complex blueprints and technical documents.
  • Proficiency with fabrication machinery, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Knowledge of welding, metal finishing, and fabrication techniques.
  • Strong math, measurement, and layout skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot fabrication issues and solve problems independently.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Physical ability to lift 50+ lbs., stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive shop tasks.
  • Commitment to safety, quality craftsmanship, and attention to detail.

Work Environment

  • Indoor sheet metal fabrication shop with diverse metalworking projects.
  • Regular exposure to noise, heat, sparks, dust, and heavy machinery.
  • PPE is provided and required at all times.
