Nature of Work
The City of Everett is accepting applications on an open/competitive basis for the Civil Service examination process for a JUDICIAL ASSISTANT within our Municipal Court. Candidates who are bilingual in Spanish are strongly preferred. Those who meet the bilingual criteria outlined in the AFSCME contract are eligible to receive an additional monthly stipend.

About the Job:

This is a technical support position working for the Municipal Court. Under the direction of the Court Administrator, incumbents in this job class perform a wide variety of technical record keeping and clerical duties using automated systems in support of the Everett Municipal Court. These duties include, but are not limited to, processing forms, court orders, and other documentation for court cases from origin to final disposition; assisting the public by explaining court procedures and the judicial system; maintaining accounting, legal, and financial records; and filing and monitoring a variety of functions such as civil, criminal, and traffic violations. Judicial Assistants are expected to work with reasonable discretion within established guidelines.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent AND
  • Two (2) years of general office support experience that included heavy public contact and computer use in a court or related organization.
  • College course work in criminal justice, paralegal studies, pre-law, or a closely related field is highly desirable.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Submission to and successful completion of an extensive background investigation will be required prior to appointment.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid Washington State Driver License.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Required to work rotating shifts, evenings, and various job assignments.
  • Repetitive motion, sitting for extended periods of time, and occasionally lifting up to 65 pounds.
  • The work is typically performed in an office environment or courtroom, but may also be performed in a locked holding cell or at the County Corrections Department.

EXAMINATION STEPS
  • There will be a pre-screening of all applications.
  • Responses to the supplemental questionnaire and the resume will be reviewed together to generate a single combined score, which will be blind-rated and weighted at 10%.
  • Top-scoring applicants will be called to an oral panel interview (weighted 90%) Interviews will be tentatively scheduled for early June.
  • All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process for 12 months.
IMPORTANT NOTES
  • A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register.
  • The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Applicants claiming veterans' preference points in accordance with RCW 41.04.010 as amended and meeting eligibility criteria must submit form DD214, or its equivalent or successor discharge paperwork, that characterizes his or her service as qualifying discharge as defined in RCW 73.04.005.

Benefits for the eligible employee and eligible dependents begins the first month following the employee's hire date (i.e. if hired in March, benefits start April 1st.) Premiums for Delta Dental and VSP Vision are paid by the City on behalf of the employee for single or family coverage. Premiums for HMA Medical and Kaiser Medical Coverage are shared by the employee. Premiums for Life, and Accidental Death & Dismemberment coverage on behalf of the employee are paid by the City.

An additional life insurance benefit is available through a Voluntary Life insurance program for the employee, spouse and children. The employee pays the premiums for this benefit.

It is mandatory that both the City and the employee pay into the Department of RetirementSystems for Washington State.

Three voluntary Deferred Compensation programs are available for employee participation.
A Flexible Spending Plan is available that allows you to make pre-tax contributions for Health Care reimbursement and/or Dependent Care reimbursement for eligible expenses not covered by medical insurance.
