Basic Qualifications
Requires a Bachelor's degree in Physics or a related Science or Engineering field with an emphasis in acoustics. Also requires 2+ years of job-related experience or a Master's degree. Prior acoustics experience preferred.
CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Department of Defense Secret security clearance is obtainable within a reasonable amount of time after hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.
 
Responsibilities for this Position
ROLE AND POSITION OBJECTIVES:
As an Acoustics Engineer for the Progeny Systems Business Area, you will be a member of a cross functional team responsible for the design, manufacturing and test of underwater acoustic systems.
Duties and Tasks:
* Perform technical activities which impact the proposal, system and detail-level design of advanced acoustic systems.
* Support the development and prototyping of sonar transducer/array systems.
* Support all phases of transducer/array system proposals, research, development, test, and documentation.
* Research and Development: Conduct experiments to verify the performance of materials and sensors used in underwater acoustics.
* Proposals: Contribute to preparation of multidisciplinary proposals regarding development of sonar transducer/array systems.
* Manufacturing: Contribute to system and detail design of advanced acoustics systems.
* Testing and Analysis: Evaluate material properties and acoustic sensor performance through various tests and analyze the results.
* Data Interpretation: Interpret data from experiments and tests to draw conclusions and make recommendations.
* Problem Solving: Address issues related to materials and acoustic performance, and find solutions to improve them.
* Collaboration: Work with engineers and other scientists on the development of sensors for specific applications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
* The ideal candidate will have knowledge of acoustics and its applications, including:
* Ability to apply first principles of acoustics,
* Understanding of acoustic requirements for novel applications,
* Experience in formal acoustic testing and data analysis,
* Familiarity with finite element modeling of acoustic phenomena (COMSOL, MatLab, MathCAD, Maple),
* Experience conducting experiments in laboratory facilities, and
* Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
* Masters or PhD in Physics is preferred.
* The ideal candidate will also have:
* Experience creating technical content/reports,
* Exceptional collaboration and communication skills,
* Commitment to ongoing professional development for yourself and others as a team player, and
* Knowledge of Microsoft Office (including Access and Visio).
