Responsible for developing student-athletes running ability, physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship while preparing them for competitive meets. Typical responsibilities include:
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and conduct daily cross country practices.
- Teach proper running mechanics, pacing, endurance training, and race strategy.
- Develop age-appropriate conditioning and injury prevention programs.
- Foster teamwork, discipline, leadership, and a positive team culture.
- Supervise student-athletes during practices, meets, and team travel.
- Evaluate athlete performance and provide individualized coaching.
- Ensure compliance with school, conference, and state athletic association rules.
- Communicate regularly with athletes, parents, school administrators, and athletic directors.
- Organize meet entries, transportation, equipment, and uniforms.
- Promote academic success and good sportsmanship among student-athletes.
- Maintain accurate records, attendance, and equipment inventories.
- Ensure a safe training environment and respond appropriately to injuries or emergencies.

Typical Duties During the Season
- Lead 5-6 practices per week.
- Attend all scheduled meets and coaches meetings.
- Develop weekly training plans tailored to athlete experience and fitness levels.
- Monitor athlete progress and adjust workouts accordingly.
- Encourage participation, perseverance, and personal improvement for runners of all ability levels.
The primary goal of a Junior High Cross Country Coach is to help student-athletes develop endurance, confidence, character, and a lifelong appreciation for fitness while competing in a safe, positive, and educational environment.
