Job Description

Junior HVAC Service & Installation Technician / Apprentice

Great Starting Pay | $25-$30/Hour | Hands-On Training | Excellent Benefits | Clear Career Path

Yellow Dog Plumbing, Heating & Cooling is a growing residential HVAC and plumbing company based in Needham, MA. We’re looking for a Junior HVAC Service & Installation Technician / Apprentice who wants to learn the HVAC trade, work alongside experienced technicians, and build a long-term career in the industry.

This is an apprentice position. You will work side-by-side with our experienced lead technicians on both HVAC service calls and installations. Your job is to help the lead technician in every way possible while learning the trade along the way.

We're looking for someone who is a hustler, works hard, shows up on time, and is willing to do whatever needs to be done to help the team get the job done right. In return, we'll invest in training you and teaching you the technical skills you need to develop into a well-rounded HVAC technician.

Our goal is for you to learn service, maintenance, diagnostics, and installation and eventually develop the skills and experience necessary to operate your own Yellow Dog service truck and build a long-term career in HVAC.

Starting pay is $25-$30 per hour depending on your experience.

Why Work at Yellow Dog?

Great Starting Pay + Opportunity to Grow - Starting pay of $25-$30 per hour depending on experience. As your skills, knowledge, and responsibilities increase, you'll have opportunities to increase your compensation and advance within the company.

We'll Train You - You'll work directly alongside experienced HVAC service and installation technicians. You'll learn by doing real work in customers' homes while receiving hands-on training in HVAC service, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and installation.

Learn Both Service & Installation - We want you to become a well-rounded HVAC professional. You'll gain experience with furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, mini-splits, traditional air conditioning systems, and other residential HVAC equipment.

A Real Career Path - This isn't a dead-end helper position. Our goal is to develop you into a technician who can eventually run your own service truck. As Yellow Dog continues to grow, there will also be opportunities to advance into senior technician, leadership, training, and management positions.

No High-Pressure Sales - We believe in ALWAYS doing what's right for the customer - even when that means no sale for us. Our technicians diagnose problems, educate homeowners, offer good options, and help customers make the right decisions.

Excellent Benefits - Yellow Dog contributes toward the cost of your health, dental, and vision insurance. We also offer a 401(k) with a 4% company match, paid time off, parental leave, tuition reimbursement, tools, uniforms, pant allowance, boot allowance, and more.

Your Voice Matters - You'll have direct access to company leadership, including the owner/CEO. We want people who care about what they're doing, ask questions, bring ideas to the table, and help us continue improving.

Great Service Area - Our primary markets include Needham, Newton, Wellesley, Brookline, Weston, and surrounding communities.

What Being an Apprentice at Yellow Dog Means

As an apprentice, your first responsibility is to support the lead technician and help the team in every way you can.

Some days you'll be helping diagnose or repair a furnace or boiler. Other days you'll be carrying equipment, organizing tools, running for materials, cleaning the work area, helping install ductwork or piping, assisting with a heat pump or mini-split installation, or doing whatever else the lead technician needs to complete the job properly and efficiently.

No job is beneath you. We expect our apprentices to be willing to carry equipment, clean up, organize the truck, get tools, make supply runs, protect the customer's home, and handle the less glamorous parts of the job along with the technical work.

We're looking for someone who sees those responsibilities as an opportunity rather than a burden. Work hard, hustle, pay attention, ask questions, and make yourself useful. In return, our experienced technicians will teach you the trade.

The more you learn and demonstrate that you can handle, the more responsibility we'll give you.

What You'll Learn

Working alongside our experienced technicians, you'll learn how to:

  • Assist with residential HVAC service calls, maintenance, repairs, and installations

  • Work on furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, mini-splits, and traditional A/C systems

  • Properly use HVAC tools, meters, gauges, and diagnostic equipment

  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical HVAC problems

  • Perform preventative maintenance and system tune-ups

  • Assist with removal and replacement of HVAC equipment

  • Learn proper piping, wiring, drainage, venting, ductwork, and equipment installation techniques

  • Test newly installed and repaired equipment for proper operation

  • Keep trucks, tools, equipment, and job sites clean and organized

  • Protect customers' homes and property while work is being performed

  • Communicate professionally with homeowners

  • Understand how an HVAC service call works from beginning to end

  • Develop the technical and customer-service skills necessary to eventually operate your own service truck

Who We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who:

  • Wants to build a long-term career in the HVAC industry

  • Has 2+ years of HVAC experience preferred, but not required

  • Has HVAC education, trade school experience, or a mechanical background - a plus, but not required

  • Is a hard worker and willing to hustle

  • Shows up on time and ready to work every day

  • Is willing to do whatever reasonable job is necessary to help the lead technician and the team

  • Is mechanically inclined and enjoys working with their hands

  • Is eager to learn and isn't afraid to ask questions

  • Listens to experienced technicians and follows direction

  • Takes pride in doing high-quality work

  • Keeps tools, trucks, equipment, and job sites clean and organized

  • Communicates professionally with customers and coworkers

  • Treats customers and their homes with respect

  • Has no criminal background

  • Has a valid driver's license and good driving record

  • Wants to continually learn, improve, and take on additional responsibility

You do not need to already be an experienced HVAC technician to apply. Two years of HVAC experience is preferred, but we're willing to train the right person who has a strong work ethic, mechanical ability, a positive attitude, and a genuine desire to learn.
