Junior Technical Designer – Fabrication & Production
Design Things That Actually Get Built.
MJY Fabrication Inc. creates custom environments, experiential activations, exhibits, displays, signage and one-of-a-kind fabricated projects.
Our designers don't just create something on a screen. They get to walk into the shop and see it being CNC machined, fabricated and assembled, then see the finished project installed in the real world.
This is technical design that gets built. If you're interested in design, fabrication and understanding how things actually come together, keep reading.
Where We're Going
MJY is growing. We're investing in better equipment, taking on increasingly ambitious projects and continuing to develop our design and fabrication capabilities. We're looking for someone early in their career who wants to develop their technical abilities, learn from our Lead Designer and grow alongside the company.
Why Join MJY?
• Design Work That Becomes Real: See the things you model and draw actually get fabricated, assembled and installed.
• Learn Through Real Projects: Work under our Lead Designer and alongside our fabrication team to understand how design decisions translate into the real world.
• Interesting, Varied Work: Projects range from experiential activations and exhibits to retail displays, signage and completely custom builds.
• Opportunity to Grow: As your abilities develop, you'll take on increasingly complex technical work and greater responsibility.
The Role
We're hiring a Junior Technical Designer – Fabrication & Production to join our team full-time.
You'll work directly under our Lead Designer to help turn concepts, sketches and client requirements into accurate, buildable solutions.
This is a junior position. You'll receive direction, mentorship and review from our Lead Designer while being expected to take increasing ownership of your work as your abilities develop. You won't be expected to know everything on day one, but you will be expected to think, ask good questions, stay organized, check your work and follow through.
Responsibilities
• Developing 3D models in Autodesk Fusion 360
• Producing accurate fabrication, production and assembly drawings
• Turning concepts, sketches and client requirements into buildable solutions
• Thinking through materials, construction methods, hardware, tolerances and assembly
• Preparing and supporting files for CNC production
• Reviewing dimensions and technical information before drawings reach production
• Working directly with our fabrication team to solve production challenges
• Revising drawings based on design and production feedback
• Supporting basic graphic design and production artwork
• Working with Adobe Illustrator and other Adobe Creative Suite applications
• Assisting with graphic layouts for signage, displays and branded environments
• Maintaining organized drawings, project files and documentation
• Occasionally assisting with fabrication, assembly, shop work or on-site project requirements
What We're Looking For
• Working knowledge of Autodesk Fusion 360
• Experience with 3D modelling and technical drawings
• Strong spatial and technical problem-solving skills
• Ability to read and understand dimensions and technical information
• Experience with Adobe Illustrator and/or Adobe Creative Suite
• Strong attention to detail and organization
• Ability to take direction and then move work forward
• Ability to ask thoughtful questions when information is missing
• Willingness to check your own work and follow through
• Genuine interest in fabrication, manufacturing and how things are actually built
• Professional, reliable and collaborative
• Desire to continue learning and developing your technical abilities
Experience That Is an Asset Experience with CNC machining or CNC file preparation, woodworking, millwork, industrial design, custom fabrication, exhibits and displays, experiential fabrication, signage, large-format graphics, architectural fabrication, metal fabrication, retail environments, installation or assembly is an asset. You don't need to arrive knowing every material or fabrication process we use. You do need to be curious about how things are actually made.
Working With Our Lead Designer This position reports directly to our Lead Designer, who is responsible for the overall direction and standards of MJY's design department. You'll receive direction and mentorship while taking increasing responsibility for your own work as your abilities develop. A successful working relationship means understanding the objective, asking the right questions, taking ownership, doing the work, checking it carefully, communicating and following through. This is a junior position, and we expect there to be plenty to learn.
A Hands-On Team MJY is a hands-on, collaborative company. We're not a large organization where every responsibility exists in its own separate department. While this is primarily a design position, there will be times when a project requires additional support in the shop, during assembly or on site for an installation. That might mean helping the fabrication team work through a design, assisting with assembly or helping resolve a design-related issue on site. We believe there is real value in designers understanding how their work is actually fabricated, assembled and installed. At MJY, we work together to get great projects across the finish line.
Opportunity to Grow We're looking for someone who wants to develop alongside MJY. As your capabilities grow, so will the work you're trusted with. That could mean more complex drawing packages, greater project responsibility, more challenging fabrication problems, increased involvement in design development, greater technical responsibility and expanded CNC and manufacturing knowledge. We want MJY to be somewhere a talented person can learn, contribute, take ownership and build a meaningful career.
Compensation & Benefits
• $25.00–$30.00 per hour, depending on experience and technical capability
• Full-time position
• Vancouver, BC
• In-person work
• Extended health care
• On-site parking
Apply Please submit your résumé and portfolio or examples of relevant work. We're interested in what you've done so far, but we're equally interested in what you want to learn, what you want to build and where you want to go next.
