JOB TITLE: K - 12 Guidance Counselor
LOCATION: On Site - Carlson High School/Lakeshore Virtual School
CURRENT WAGE: According to GEA Master Agreement
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
EVALUATION: Annual Evaluation by Principal
DATE AVAILABLE: 2026-2027 School Year
Responsibilities and Essential Duties:
- Determines need for, and facilitates/provides/monitors academic intervention and support to students as needed
- Works collaboratively with staff, students and parents to provide academic intervention and support in core instruction
- Assists with the coordination of standardized testing
- Competently assists with master schedule/student schedules
- Supports general education, special education and English language learners
- Assists with the college application process
- Coordinates and facilitates career development activities and career cruising, and assisits in the maintenance of student EDP's
- Monitors student progress and credit acquisition towards the MMC requirements
- Guides students through post-secondary options
- Attends professional development as directed and necessary
- Other duties as assigned by administration.
Qualifications:
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsement in counseling (NT) OR holds a Michigan School Guidance Counselor license
- Experienced creating and reviewing Personal Curriculum
- Experienced coordinating and proctoring local (NWEA) and state (PSAT, SAT, ACT, MSTEP) assessments
- Knowledge of MI Career Model and Technical Education requirements
- Skilled and experienced addressing academic, behavioral and social needs of secondary students
- Knowledge and experience with online learning and dual enrollment
- Excellent communication and listening skills with the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with students, parents, and staff
- Teaching or counseling experience at the elementary and/or secondary level
- Experienced in working in a diverse learning community that embraces acceptance and supports students' emotional and social growth
- Experienced working with at-risk populations
- Knowledge of social and emotional needs of secondary students. Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Demonstrated interest in personal professional development
- Must possess exemplary training, experience, and attributes for the above listed Responsibilities and Essential Duties.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand and walk over extended periods of time
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time in a work day, and to sit/stand several times in short periods of time.
- Must be able to lift, carry, and transport heavy items.
