Overview
The K-12 School Principal reports directly to the Superintendent and is responsible for establishing and maintaining effective school leadership to enable the academic success of all enrolled students. The School Principal promotes Our Motto, Our Vision, Our Mission and Our Future with the parents, staff, and students who choose to attend the Quileute Tribal School. The principal promotes a caring, supportive, healthy and safe learning environment, supports the K-12 students and staff, and maintains high performance standards.

Duties

  • Confers with and acts under the direction of the Superintendent on all matters concerning the school and student policies and procedures.
  • Collaborative member of the District Leadership Team.
  • Develops and maintains cooperative relationships with parents and organizations within the community.
  • Administers the K12 school education budget, including monitoring and approving expenditures.
  • Uses the School Microix system for approval of funds, prior to purchasing.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly school environment.
  • Supervises the resolution of students, parents, faculty, and staff concerns.
  • Implements disciplinary policies and procedures related to student behavior, including school bus behavior and scholastic achievement.
  • Supervises Special Services Programs designed to assist students with social and emotional adjustments to school.
  • Collaborates with the Operations Director to ensure maintenance of the school property and equipment.
  • The Principal and Operations Director collaborate on school wide safety by functioning as co-safety officers and leading a school wide safety team (drills, agenda, running records, communication, etc.).
  • Oversees the school’s sports eligibility program for students who participate in sports with the neighboring school district.
  • Oversees the afterschool program.
  • Evaluates the curriculum and recommends improvements to and assists in upgrading the instructional program on an on-going basis.
  • Develops and monitors the master schedule of course offerings with assistance of the School Guidance Counselor.
  • Assures compliance with accreditation guidelines.
  • Assigns and oversees faculty teaching loads and special duties.
  • Conducts regular meetings of the faculty and/or staff.
  • Supervises and evaluates counselors, paraeducators and teachers.
  • Develops and oversees faculty and staff in-service programs, training, and workshops and assists individuals in their professional development.
  • Coordinates with staff on field trips and travel in collaboration with the Operations Director and Superintendent.
  • Informs staff regularly on mandatory reporting requirements.
  • Implements faculty and staff discipline procedures per policy/procedure and handbooks.
  • Works with Human Resources and Superintendent to correct individual faculty or staff performance deficiencies.
  • Makes recommendations on retention or dismissal of paraeducators, counselors and teachers to the Superintendent.
  • Directs the scheduling of classes and student activities.
  • Schedules and directs student extracurricular activities.
  • Coordinates the safety of all students.
  • Suspends students and recommends expulsion of students to the Superintendent for violations of school policies and procedures and Tribal laws.
  • Coordinates K-6 and 7-12 school programs, events and activities with related departments and outside agencies and organizations.
  • Supervises the maintenance of proper student records and ensures confidentiality of these records.
  • Facilitates community participation in the use of the school.
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Superintendent.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Substantial knowledge of current principles of school education management and administration.
  • Ability to lead faculty and staff and develop leadership among the teachers.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.
  • Ability to relate well with the children and families of the Quileute Tribe and other tribal groups and non-natives.
  • Working knowledge of school district, community, and the Tribal government
  • Ability to work independently and, in the same environment, lead a large team of employees who have diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong oral communication and good writing skills with demonstrated ability to express ideas effectively in private and public settings.
  • Highly skilled in maintaining confidentiality of information.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to conduct in-house training of faculty and staff regarding mandatory reporting and confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and follow-through with tasks.
  • Working knowledge of principles of conflict resolution and advanced skills in resolving interpersonal problems in a school environment.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Master’s degree in educational administration, supervision, or appropriately related field or working towards the completion of said degree. QTS is willing to consider candidates in approved educational leadership programs and agreed upon completion dates.
  • Current Washington State Principal Certificate for Elementary and/or Secondary Education or working towards completion on an agreed upon completion date.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience working with public school district staff and community agency officers and representatives.
  • Minimum of five years successful public teaching or working in schools.
  • Experience in developing, implementing, and managing complex budgets.
  • Experience working with students and families from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
