ACSD K–2 Principal & Special Education Coordinator

Role Overview:

The K–2 Principal at Grant Elementary serves as the instructional and administrative leader for early elementary grades, providing vision, leadership, and management to ensure a safe, nurturing, and high-quality learning environment. This role emphasizes early literacy, foundational skill development, and the social-emotional growth of young learners. The Principal fosters a positive school culture, supports staff development, and ensures compliance with district, state, and federal requirements.

As an integral part of a school's instructional leadership team, the special education coordinator is responsible for managing program services and compliance and for facilitating communication at the district level and with external agencies.

 

Immediate Supervisor:

Superintendent of Schools

 

Required Education and Experience:

B.A./B.S. Degree in Education

Experience in public education, preferably at the elementary level

M.A. Degree in Educational Administration

Valid Iowa Administrator License with evaluator approval

 

Terms of Contract:Salary Range:

Annual 220-day contract$100,000 - $110,000 (based on qualifications & experience)

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Instructional Leadership

  • Provide leadership in early childhood curriculum, instruction, and assessment aligned with district goals and Iowa Academic Standards
  • Promote strong foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional learning
  • Establish high expectations for student learning, behavior, and engagement
  • Supervise and evaluate staff, offering meaningful feedback and growth opportunities
  • Support developmentally appropriate, research-based instructional practices
  • Lead data-informed decision-making to improve student outcomes
  • Foster collaboration among staff to strengthen instruction and student learning

School Climate and Student Support

  • Maintain a safe, welcoming, and developmentally appropriate learning environment
  • Promote a culture of kindness, respect, and inclusivity
  • Oversee student behavior using positive and restorative practices appropriate for young learners
  • Support the social-emotional development and well-being of all students
  • Collaborate with counselors, special education staff, and support personnel to meet diverse student needs
  • Ensure smooth transitions for students entering and progressing through early elementary grades

Administration and Operations

  • Oversee the daily operations of Grant Elementary
  • Develop and manage building schedules, supervision plans, and routines that support young learners
  • Ensure compliance with district policies and state and federal regulations
  • Assist in the development and management of the building budget
  • Coordinate building-level programs, activities, and services

Staff Leadership and Development

  • Recruit, support, and retain high-quality elementary educators
  • Promote professional learning focused on early childhood best practices
  • Build a collaborative and supportive professional culture
  • Address personnel matters in alignment with district procedures and agreements

Family and Community Engagement

  • Serve as a positive representative of the Albia Community School District
  • Build strong partnerships with families to support student success
  • Maintain clear, consistent, and approachable communication with families and staff
  • Encourage family involvement in school activities and learning
  • Collaborate with community agencies and early childhood partners

Other Responsibilities

  • Participate in district leadership meetings and committees
  • Support district initiatives and strategic goals
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent
