Responsible for the coordination of the general care, well-being, and disposition of the population of animals housed in the shelter. Maintains a safe and sanitary environment in the shelter. Trains and mentors' staff, volunteers and community service assigned to the kennel in daily responsibilities of kennel operations. Assists the veterinarian during examinations, necropsies, and other animal services.
JOB FUNCTION:
- Ensures work required of yourself, other staff, volunteers and community service assigned to the kennel is done accurately, including daily update of animal records; animals receive necessary bedding, water, and food; meet standards for exercise, socialization, feeding, hygiene; and administering treatments and care per the Veterinary orders.
- Provide daily animal care as directed.
- Routinely checking the overall health of each animal in the shelter.
- Clean, disinfect and sanitizes areas housing animals on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
- Oversee relinquish requests, barn cat placement, and general communication with local and regional rescues.
- Works with and provides recommendations to the Veterinary Public Health Manager, Internal Operations in determination of disposition of sheltered animals
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate's degree plus 3-5 years of progressively responsible job duties relating to animal care and handling animals in a shelter environment.
- Licensed Veterinary Technician preferred. Any equivalent combination of education, training, certification and experience which provides the required knowledge and skill to perform the essential functions of the job will be considered.
- Euthanasia Certificate (through the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation) within 12 months of employment.
- Subject to background check including fingerprinting.
STARTING SALARY/BENEFITS
$27.41/hr.
HOURS
37.5 hours per week with some, early evening, weekend, and holidays.
It is highly recommended that all Health Department staff are up to date on the Covid vaccination as determined by the CDC and IDPH, including all primary series doses and boosters. In addition, certain vaccines are mandatory and a condition of employment with the Health Dept.
