TITLE: Kindergarten Academic Assistant (15 hours per week)

SUMMARY: Reporting to the Building Principal, the Academic Assistant provides support to Kindergarten students identified as having academic difficulties and/or assists in the classroom to support the education of all students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides targeted instruction in core subjects to students
  • Works with teachers to utilize appropriate interventions for students
  • Provides adult support or supervision in classrooms when the classroom teacher is not physically present in the classroom (provide substitute teacher coverage in emergencies)
  • Works with Building Principal and other professional staff to identify and provide solutions for other issues that are providing barriers to the success of students academically
  • Aids in providing additional assistance as warranted in communicating and checking in with students and/or their parents

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree preferred; Minimum of two years of experience working with children; post-secondary training and experience working in an educational setting with children of varying abilities is strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of child development and learning challenges faced by students; curriculum expectations; use of computer and relevant educational software; operation of school equipment.

Skill-based competencies include interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy; planning and organizing work to meet deadlines.

Abilities-based competencies include communicating effectively with students, teachers, and administrators; maintaining cooperative, productive, and flexible working relationships with students and staff; solving practical problems; understanding and carrying out directions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to remain in a stationary position for extended periods; move or lift up to 30 lbs. Accommodations may be made for an individual with disabilities to perform the functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy indoor school classroom environment.
